Windows Me obsolete?

I find that microsoft no longer supports Windows Me, nor does Zone Labs and now AVG
has a new version which I can download but not install. AVG will no longer support
the old version. Does this mean that I must scrap my operating system?

No, you don't have to scrap ME. MS just isn't issuing any more updates to it as of
July '06. All updates up to that point are available on the update site however.
If you haven't updated ME in a while I would go get all the available updates. It
might take a few visits depending on what is needed for your machine. As far as ZoneAlarm
goes, go to oldversion.com and get version 6.0 which is one of the last versions
compatible with Win9x, and again like ME, still perfectly usable. When setting it
up, just set it for manual (not automatic) updates and forget about it. AVGs latest
release of 7.5 works fine with ME also. I'd try downloading and installing it again
after you've applied all Windows updates. There may be some .dll file or whatever
that's needed for AVG to install correctly.

I think ME works better then the new Vista Operating System, so try to keep your
computer for a couple more years if you can. I think it will take that long for Vista
to come up to speed with Hardware, and software.

If you're still having trouble with AVG try this: Uninstall the old version, reboot,
install the new version, reboot. That's worked on a half-dozen Windows Me computers
I've come across. There's a problem with running the new version installer as an
"upgrade" on Windows Me and there's a lot of discussion about it on the AVG Free
forums. I don't know if anyone ever came up with a good solution but this workaround
is easy enough. Once installed, version 7.5 works just fine.
