Linksys Wireless Adpater unable to connect after start up

When I turn on my computer and open the Linksys Wireless G program it immediately
finds a strong signal but within 2 seconds drops it. Even though the signal remains
strong it takes about 1/2 to 1 hour to connect to it again. If I leave my computer
on all day it never drops the signal again but stays connected all the time until
shutdown. It's quite an annoyance so I hope someone will have an idea how to fix
it.

I'm using a HP Omnibook 900 notebook computer that had I believe win98 installed
originally but was upgrade to ME.
