dll problema

hi,
this is the error i receive after winme graphic page shows up. then system locks
up.
"error loading explorer.exe. you must reinstall windows. linked to missing export
NTDLL.DLL:RtlGetNVersionNumbers."
i don't want to reinstall, anyway, i don't have a startup disk nor WinMe OS cd. i
want to save my harddrive contents, so basically, reinstalling is not an option.
most forums tell me to get a startup disk and extract corrupt dll file, etc. etc.
but i am in need of a startup disk. i can't find one online anywhere.
i heard that softmau POWERSUITE might work. does anybody having feedback to my query
or the software product?
please advise.

Firstly, reinstalling Windows -
You do not need a WinME installation CD. Win ME can be reinstalled from your hard
disk without an installation CD. Here is Jack Gulley's solution to your problem:
"You have to be able to boot the system with either Windows or some version of DOS
that supports the 32bit FAT and Long File Names. MS DOS 6.22 and below will not do.
If you can boot the system into Safe mode, you can start the SETUP program in the
C:\Windows\Options\Install folder (sometimes it's in the C:\Windows\Options\CABS
folder).
If you can't get to Safe Mode, then you need a Windows 98/ME boot or startup diskette.
You can make one on any running Windows ME system. Go to Control Panel, Add/Remove
Programs, Startup disk tab. Alternatively, you can use the www.bootdisk.com web site
to download a diskette image and a utility to make a boot diskette. From the boot
diskette's A:\ prompt, run C:\Windows\Options\Install\SETUP (or, alternatively, run
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs\SETUP).
In both cases, have your system's Product Key to hand."
See : http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/1081893868
Your product key (serial number) is located on the General tab at:
Start > Settings > Control Panel > System
Reinstalling Windows ME normally only overwrites your Windows folder (which is usually
located at C:\Windows) and its sub-folders, not your whole disk; but it is nevertheless
prudent to back up all your files before doing such a reinstall.
It is also prudent to boot to DOS and rename the C:\WINDOWS folder as C:\WINOLD before
attempting the reinstall, so that you can restore your current Windows installation
if anything goes wrong with the reinstall.
You will want to keep certain folders, such as C:\WINDOWS\FAVORITES and C:\WINDOWS\DESKTOP,
in any event; so make a copy of them on another disk.
Secondly, replacing corrupt DLL files
You do not need a Win ME installation CD in order to replace corrupt Windows .dll
files.
Backup copies of the Windows .dll files can be found on your hard disk, in zipped
(compressed) files with the extension .CAB (known as Cabinet files) in the folder
C:\Windows\Options\Cabs and you can unzip those files using many (third party) freeware
or shareware unzip programs, and then copy the .dll file in question to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
From the error message you've reported, it looks like the file NTDLL.DLL in the folder
C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM is the one that has been corrupted, so try replacing it with a
backup copy from the C:\Windows\Options\Cabs folder, where it's contained in the
compressed file WIN_14.CAB

hi,
thanx for reply. here is what i have done so far. i was able to obtain a winme
startup cd:
after floppy boot and startup cd went through i followed your procedure(s); when
i try to access any windows folders i cannot. i cannot access windows period.
i tried doing an "ext" to bring me to the cabs folder but i keep getting an error
that says "not ready reading drive e:" drive e is an cd/rw drive. drive d:, where
winme startup cd is, is a regular cdrom drive. i checked if e: was ok by trying other
cds and it is ok.
so basically my two problems are not being to access windows at all and drive
e: error. if i can get into windows i think i'll then be able to solve dll problem
as well as explorer.exe error.
thanx all,
soj

You will need to fix the problem with Windows by starting up in DOS mode, and using
DOS programs to cure the fault.
Step 1: Boot to DOS using a bootable Win ME floppy from http://www.bootdisk.com
and then type the following at the A: prompt in order to switch to your C drive -
C:
Step 2: At the C:\ prompt type this -
SCANREG /RESTORE
and follow the instructions on your screen. Try to restore the *oldest* backup of
the registry (they're listed by date), as that's the one with the best chance of
being from before the problem arose.
By default Windows keeps 5 backup copies of the Windows Registry, so that you can
go back to before the problem arose.
When the message flashes up to tell you the registry is successfully restored, try
to restart the computer normally.
Step 3: Bad luck if you have to go this far! If step 2 doesn't solve the problem,
boot to the C: prompt and type this instead -
SCANREG /FIX
This one will take 5 or 10 minutes. When the message flashes up to tell you that
the registry is successfully fixed, try to restart the computer normally.
If the computer seems to "freeze" during this step, DON'T touch anything! This is
normal. Wait the full ten minutes; the process does NOT give much visual feedback,
but it is *very* important NOT to interrupt this step once you have begun it.
If none of this gets Windows running normally, post a full and detailed description
here of every step you took, and of what the outcome of each step was, and I will
then try some other suggestions.

Would you please explain what the phrase "(no go-"explorer.exe, must restart windows...")
means, as I don't understand it.
Please give the EXACT WORDING of every error message you are seeing.
Also, please clarify where you obtained your start up floppy disk from, and which
version you are using. It is ESSENTIAL that you boot the system with a Windows ME
startup disk only.
Any other type of boot disk will cause the suggested solution to fail, because of
operating system incompatibilities. A Win98 or DOS boot disk will cause this failure.
