Freeze-Up At Windows ME screen

HP Pavilion 7840 with 512MB SDRAM
every now and then(like today)it freezes at Windows ME screen.I went into SAFEMODE
and tried step by step but it froze.In safemode I ran scandisk both standard and
thorough.in thorough it froze up with an error message stating Windows had tried
10 times to finish but some other program was running.taskmon didn't show anything.I
finally used system restore and that worked but I have no idea why or what caused
it.how do I stop this happening again?
