Cannot Open Files in Windows Movie Maker

Dear all:
One of my friends is having a problem with Windows Movie Maker: whenever he tries
to open a file, a message "Moviemk has caused an error in KERNEL32.DLL. Moviemk
will now close." will appear.
His resolution for display is 16 bits, and his Operating System is Windows Me (but
you knew that already). He has re-installed the Movie Maker for a couple of times,
but it didn't work.
Please give me your guidance!
