Single download source for winME updates?
Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 4:19 pm Posted by Ed Crosby
(1 messages posted)
Greetings, all:
Is there any one location on the 'Net where I can go to download all of the
critical/security updates published by Microsoft for winME so I can install them
LATER?
I would like to put them on a CD to keep with my winME installation disc in case
I have to do a full OS reinstall again (I've had to do that 3 times so far for various
reasons).
Thanks in advance,
Ed

You can download them from Microsoft. Save them to the Desktop, and burn them to
CDR.

Steve,
They don't make it particularly easy, do they?
I finally located the English download catalog (http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/en/default.asp)
and checkmarked several dozen security updates. I then clicked the link labeled "Go
to download basket", only to find zero items in the basket!
I went through the whole process again, with the same results.
Bottom line: I can select the updates I want, but can't download them because they
are not added to my "download basket".
What do I do now?
Thanks,
Ed

Not sure what is wrong. I just tried it, and had no problem. Did you get to the Part
where you have to Browse to the Download Location of your Choice, this
makes the Download Button Clickable, on the Download Basket Page.

Steve,
I did see the "browse to the download location..." button, but it was not active
("grayed out"). I didn't try entering a download location in the dialog box; maybe
that would've worked.
The download button was already clickable, but when I clicked it a new screen popped
up telling me I had no items in my download basket. However on the previous screen
the counter showing the number of items in my download basket incremented by 1 every
time I checkmarked an update to download.
I'll try again.
Thanks,
Ed

Just type each update number in search window of link, and you will be able to find,
and download the updates one at a time. Seems awkward, but I did this for a friend
a few months ago how didn't have a broadband connection, and I downloaded about 65
to 70 XP updates in (3), 30 minutes sessions I spent on the project over a few days.
ME probably only has about 25 Critical update to download, so it shouldn't take to
long.

Try WindizUpdate

Hi Ed,
You could try this - but you have to use Firefox, not IE:
1. Go to http://www.windowsupdate.62nds.com/
2. Install the Firefox extension, then follow the instructions and collect the updates.
3. Once it's finished, you should be able to find them in C:\WUTemp (as long as you
"show hidden folders").
This doesn't automatically install the updates; you have to do that manually, but
at least you can find them all in (and copy them from) one folder.
Hope that helps!

SJ,
"Real life" has intruded, postponing my ME update situation, but I hope to get back
to the problem here shortly.
I think the reason that I was able to checkmark the updates I wanted from the Microsoft
catalog but was unable to get them to appear in my "download basket" is because I
was using Netscape 7.1, which I greatly prefer to any version of IE.
My next attempt will be to try to do the same thing using IE. If that doesn't work,
I may install Firefox (which I downloaded a few weeks ago but have not yet installed)
and try your solution.
Thanks for the link!
Best,
Ed

It shouldn't be necessary to go to an alternative website to d/l ME updates. In fact,
are 9x updates even available on that site?
There may be a page on M$ site that lists all previous ME updates, so you can d/l
and burn to CD. I s'pose some detective work would get you there. The page for 98
still up.
However, Jack Gulley's website has a list, with links, to ME updates... Windows ME

Jack Gulley has a list of the ME updates on his website, which will no longer be
updated. If there are dead links, that's why.
I'd try that rather than that alternative update site, which may not even have 9x
updates available. I don't see why they would.

Carol,
I had no trouble (well, it wasn't as easy as it should have been) getting to the
MS download catalog with all of the winME critical and security updates, and I was
able to checkmark the ones I wanted. However, when I went to the "download basket"
to download the files, none of them were there -- the basket was empty.
I was using Netscape 7.1, and I suspect that the MS site does not fully support that
browser version (long live www.anybrowser.org!).
I'll try again using IE when I have some more time.
Cheers,
Ed

Yes, they are. That's why I mentioned it; I've just recently had the same problem,
with Windows ME.
If you're going to go to an alternative site to find a list of updates, why not go
to one that downloads them for you? It did the job quickly and reliably, so I thought
it was worth sharing :o)

The site you provided the link for (WindizUpdate) uses a browser plugin to scan your
system in order to determine which updates you need.
I can't use that, because I want to select the updates myself -- which include half
a dozen or so that I've already installed.
The reason is that I want to keep a CD of all important winME updates with
my winME distribution disc so I can install them all again if I have to reinstall
the OS.
And I have 3 systems running winME, one of which is in a location without a telephone
connection (i.e. no Internet access).
But thanks,
Ed
