Adding memory

I have a older HP Pavilion computer that when I bought it back in 2001 that was fast enough then and today still is fairly fast but I do notice it does take some applications to just take to long completing etc etc. It's mainly used now as a back up system, ny question is if I added more memory will that actually give me any significant speed increase that will make it worth the effort and is it worth the expense..memory I have seen to upgrade really doesn't seem that expensive to me or does some one have a reference to get quality memory chips at a good price. Will more memory help with some problems like browser hanging up sometimes loading certain pages that are content rich etc etc

You haven't said how much memory you have at the moment?

I would have thought that WinME would need at least 256Mb minimum.

Shared graphics memory and a 700 cele most likely?? Increasing Win ME to 512 (beyond
that, Win 9X doesn't really benefit and may actually get worse), you might see a
slight difference but it would be questionable as to whether it would be worth it.
(This memory isn't being produced anymore so make sure it's new and not recycled)
Only one way to find out, and you need to use the recommended memory or you could
have issues as well. Make sure the BIOS is updated enough to handle more memory.
Many big OEMs had problems without upgrades. Owners manual should tell you what
you need to know..

I did go to HP's site awhile back and did a search for memory upgrades for that machine, it's a Pavilion XE-783 and I do re-call they had some recommended memory upgrades info for it but at the time I was just thinking about it , but the machine has been error free for 7 years and still usuable but sure wish it could be faster..back in the day I bought it, it seemed pretty darn fast but nowdays it just bogs down when accessing some info or sites. It tolerable just as it is but if it would speed up markedly if I added lil more recommended memory I think I want to if it aint wallet breaking to get the memory.

James the thing is with memory. Its what programs use to run their applications.
Therefore the more programs you have running the (each takes up some memory usage)
the less available memory you have.

Do you have any icons next to your clock?

If you do then these are programs running in the background, all using memory. Do
you need these programs running, all the time?

Virus checkers are normally memory hungry. Do you actually need that running all
the time. I have a virus checker but I only use it to check suspect files.

If you Run: msconfig this will show you a list of programs that run as soon
as Windows starts. You can enable/disable programs to see what difference it makes.

More Ram probably won't help Web surfing. A Big program like Photoshop would benefit though. You probably are just suffering from what I call Bit Rot. With time Windows can deteriorate, as all the internet Crud builds up, and slows down the Computer.

Absolutely more memory will help. I have an ME Gateway with 384meg memory and it does work better than when it had only 256 meg. You can buy 128meg chips for as little as $20 if you shop around. Most memory chips are made in Asia so brand names don't mean much. If they work, use them. Try a company online called Comptick. Good memory for low price.
