Modem connects but no data gets transferred

I have a 7 year-old Dell computer using Windows ME and use a dial-up modem to connect to the internet. The last couple of days when I try to connect, the modem dials and connects to my ISP but no data gets transferred. I check the connection status info and it shows that the modem is connected but no lights are flashing in the little monitors on bottom right-hand corner of my monitor. My mail cannot get through and I get a message stating that it cannot connect to my mail server, etc. I then close Outlook and open my browser, Firefox. Here I cannot view any pages and it acts as if I am not connected at all. I disconnect the dial-up connection and then try dialing in again. Sometimes I can get connected and everything is fine but most of the time my system freezes up while it is dialing in this second time and I then have to shut-down the computer. This is very frustrating as I try to keep a very clean computer using several virus protection programs and defrag at least once a month. I am not sure if my computer is the culprit or if there is some type of virus causes this that my programs aren't catching. I always do a virus scan in safe-mode. I know that my computer's age might be a factor but I have two other computers that are older than this one and are running Win98 and work great. They both have no problems when dialing up. I would like to solve this problem as I am not ready to get a new computer at the moment and if this is an easy fix, I would like to go that way first. I checked all of my dial-up connection info and it is all correct. The bytes received never get over 400 when I first log on. Thanks

Might be just a Bad Modem. The local office supply store should sell them if you don't have a spare to swap. About 10 bucks. If you do decide to try that make sure you get one that has Drivers for WinME.

Yeah, I get something like that, too. I call them "fake connects" and I've found 2 causes.

#1. I'm guessing, but your ISP accepts your ID and passwords and then nothing. When you try to send something the little icon in the system tray lights up to show something going out, but nothing comes back?

When this happens to me (once or twice a month) I quit and try a few hours later, sometimes I wait till starting time at my ISP's HQ. Now the ISP does not own the whole national net it has. It contracts out to local servers. Apparently they have one server for the IDs and PWs and then they pass control to another. Somewhere there is a server that is not responding. When the personnel at the ISP notice that they'll fix it. You can call them about it if you wish. But this is Memorial Day weekend and your support staff is probably stuffing hot dogs in their faces and getting their 1st sunburn of 2007.

#2. In opening and closing browsers, tabs, cancelling the email client before it's finished connecting, antivirus updating in background, etc, I've been able to jam something in my modem. Nothing will go out or in properly. If I disconnect my modem can finish handshaking with the carrier wave and such but can't sign on. In that case, I just reboot and it's cured.

If your situation is anything like that, go to Start > Settings > Control Panel > System and uninstall your modem. Then go thru the hassle of reinstalling it. That is, I'm saying your driver may've become corrupted.

I bought a new modem, pulled out the old one and popped in the new one. I fired up the computer but nothing came up as finding a new device. I checked around and the new modem is no where to be found. My computer can't detect it and states that there isn't a modem installed. After shutting down I pulled the new one out and put it in a different empty slot. After restarting, the computer immediately detected it and I was able to install its drivers. Something was wrong with that slot where the old modem was installed. I tried to connect to my ISP hoping all was fixed but I got the same problem as what was happening to my old modem. So I don't feel the modem was the problem. I am wondering that if there isn't something going on with the motherboard and that maybe it is going bad. Sometimes my computer won't recognize that I have a CD in the drive and it keeps asking for me to insert it. It doesn't happen all the time but I noticed that was something new lately. Sometimes the CD drive works and sometimes it won't run at all. Also, the blinking of the display when I am starting Windows. When the icons come up they are all little generic boxes and while they are turning into what they are supposed to look like, some will disappear in squarish sections and then reappear. This is something that just started happening lately. There are a lot of strange things happening, some sporatic, some all the time. I thought maybe it was a virus but nothing comes up in my scans. I have two other computers both older than this one and I never have any of these problems including the internet connection. That's why I am concluding that it is either my motherboard going bad, the power supply going bad or things just got so screwed up on this computer somehow that I may have to format the whole thing, reinstall Windows and see if that doesn't fix things. If the problem lies in my motherboard or power supply, then maybe it is indeed time to get a new computer. Thanks

Those are symptoms of a weak CMOS battery. When the computer is off it keeps the date and time. Additional demands are made of it as the computer boots. That is, the power supply has a slight delay in turning on and the CPU & BIOS depend on the CMOS battery for a fraction of a second to check the devices. Failure of the BIOS to recognize devices is the result long before the battery totally fails and loses the date.
