My poor old machine is running badly. Someone suggested I try Spyware Doctor to fix things up. After waiting for 2 hours to download this (I'm on a dial up) I tried to install it and am told the installer requires Windows 2000 or higher. I thought Windows ME was higher than 2000. Can anyone help me keep this old machine going?

ME is a bit newer, but not one of the NT Operating systems. That is probably why. So you probably can't use your new Program. Your best bet would be to register at one of the Malware Removal Forums, and post a request for a Malware removal routine. and be ready to post a Hijackthis log if requested.
