The System Configuration Utility that Steve mentioned may not correctly identify a specific hardware if the driver is not installed. You may need to actually open the PC. A long shot but you may contact Gateway for the drivers. I did it once with HP and they pointed me to the right website. Just curious, why did you wipe out the Windows 2000? It's like you're already in heaven but went to hell instead. If you have two Cd roms on the Computer, then one is probably the E drive. You might go buy a USB thumb Drive to help get data to the Computer, better yet find a neighborhood geek to help. Sounds like you are in over your head though. Installing Windows can be daunting for some. I would install XP myself, but when done You will still need to install a few Drivers.
