Depends on what the root problem is. Without a restore/recovery/install CD, there
isn't much you can do, until you have the correct media for your machine, as most
likely, it will be needed. Again, it all depends on what the problem is in the first
place. Would need a better description.

to ck, i did create a back up disk through add/remove program, but for some reason that did not work either, i followed all the prompts correctly, but nothing happened, i used the floppy disk to reboot my computer, and i just got two separate error messages, i was told to find attrib.exe/ATTRIB.EXE and copy that to the floppy, well, all my search found was ATTRIB and ATTRIBUTE in c:\windows\command. So, i dont know what else to do.

to ed. i have already done the 'disabling' of my system restore to see if that will work, all it did was remove my previous restore points, and it still doesnt work.

The floppy created is for booting and doing a limited number of things for specific
problems only when problems start on the hard drive. It will allow you to start
the computer and load the drivers to access the CD ROM for running the CD install
disc when you need to do repair operations, or a repair install. It won't do a repair
install as it sound like that's what you will need to do if the hardware is still
OK. You need an MS install CD or the recovery discs that might have come with the
machine, or if the install/setup program CD was copied to the hard drive, you would
need to run it from there. But if the drive is damaged or corrupted, then you are
pretty well stuck until you have the correct install media to use for repair/reinstall..

The Attrib command is specific for doing an operation that isn't what you need, so
not sure why there was a message for that at this point.

http://www.computerhope.com/attribhl.htm

I think you are going to need experienced professional help to diagnose your machine
properly and get it running again. Sorry.. Some things need to be hands on and
we can't do that from a forum.. :-( Good Luck!

ck ok, ty, looks like its a matter of me getting rid of the machine (i bought it 2nd hand and no cd with it-the owner doesnt have it either). as for professional help, yep that's an option too. anyway ty. this machine is definitely broken.

HOW TO REINSTALL Windows ME WITHOUT AN INSTALLATION CD

If nothing else works, you can reinstall Windows ME even if you have no installation CD, by following the instructions in this post:

http://www.annoyances.org/exec/forum/winme/1081893868

This is the "nuclear" option though. You will lose all your settings, and will therefore have to reinstall all of your PC's hardware and all programs. You *must* have the original setup disks and CDs to hand in order to do this.

You *must* also have your "product key" (serial number) to hand. The Product Key is stored (in plain text, unencrypted) in the Windows Registry at -

  HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion

the only floppy back up is what i created from the add/remove program which i have a feeling is useless, i do not have the cd with the windows me program on it, so im guessing there's nothing i can do. the created cd i did from the add/remove programs has the relevant programs on it, 'windows' program's files, etc. thats basically all i have. anyway ed, thankyou for trying to help me, ive just spent $20 on a registry smart program to deal with any errors in my registry, ive as yet to use my system restore, but im waiting on a particular week to try it out, as i need a program called 'final draft7' and my music folder back to do this system restore, and since using this registry cleaner program i havent tried a system restore, i kinda want to do it all in one go, for the two files i mentioned, these two files are important to me, i need the prog 'final draft 7' for work im doing, and my music folder, as i spent hours and years accumulating over 800 and couting songs on it. so they are very important to me, and if this registry cleaner doesnt help, then ive just wasted more money. but ed, thank you verymuch for trying to help. much appreciated.

Jo-Ann, did you ever solve the problem?

Looking back over your earlier posts, it does occur to me that you never really defined what the problem actually was!

I realise you were looking for information on how to use System Restore, but you never seem to have mentioned why you needed to do that.

What was the underlying problem? Perhaps we here can make some other suggestions: System Restore is not the only way of curing problems in WinME.

Ed No, havent solved my problem yet, and unfortunately i probably never will. i deleted two very important files as recent as early in september, and i need them both back badly, they were helping me with some work im doing and i also need these files to help as file extensions, the program im using now is not acceptable as a file extension. and thats why i needed to use my system restore, which basically will not work. also, i disabled it, not realising that would lose any previous restore points, so im basically stuck with not being able to use the system restore and no prior restore points. anyway, thank you for your response and concerns, but, ed, i honestly dont think there's anything anyone can do to help me. my old windows me program is a lost cause (no help and support or upgrades makes it equally difficult, no cd with the windows me program to reinstall doesnt help either). anyway, ty again.

It sounds as though this is no longer a Windows problem. Have you thought about looking round the internet for a support forum for whatever utility program you're having the problem with?

I don't know what sort of file extension might be involved, but perhaps a support forum for the program in question will know.

It isn't clear if you've lost a data file or a program file. If the latter, the problem is not hopeless. If the former, you should be thinking about getting yourself an undelete program to search your hard disk for the deleted files - the degree of success will depend on how much use the hard disk has had in the meanwhile.

ed already been there and done that, which is why im on annoyances.org, and why i went into tech forum guys, so far, absolutely nothing, no one has been able to help me out. as for support, there is none for windows me, no support no upgrades. as for programs helping me to find lost files, they all cost money and i cant afford to continually pay for programs constantly until i get the right one, i did pay $20 for registrysmart and that didnt help, but im not wasting money unnecessarily (i cant afford to). also, ive lost 2 files, one was a folder with all the music i downloaded over 5 years, and the 2nd file was a program i needed for work im doing, its a different ext to wordpad or adobe (.doc, .pdf). and no there is no support forums for the program i lost, none at all, because, i didnt pay for it, it was sent to me online as a file, and i cant retrieve it back. so as i said before, im basically stuck. but ty once again, for your quick response, but, nothing can be done about my problem. oh and ive tried an 'undelete' program, paid for it, waste of money, nothing happened, it came up with files i didnt recognise from the previous owner, but none of mine, so that was also money wasted.

Freeware Undelete Utility needed - Was: system restore will not work
Thursday, November 1, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Posted by Ed (587 messages posted)

I wasn't suggesting wasting any money on the problem. I didn't even mention money! I am willing to suggest some very effective freeware undelete programs, if you're interested in trying them.

I'm sorry to learn that you lost an entire directory of files. This is, however, far from what you previously said, when you indicated that only two files were missing.

If you've lost a massive quantity of mp3 music files, the chances are that some of them will be recoverable from the affected hard disk, with the right software, especially if you have prudently not written any further data to the disk in question. Were they in fact mp3 files?

By not mentioning your need for undelete software in the subject line you may have missed out on helpful advice that other people could have given you at a much earlier stage.

You might start by trying the program Undelete Plus at Undelete Plus - but DO NOT download it onto the affected hard disk. Download it to a floppy disk or a different hard disk.

Effective data recovery may necessitate your installing a second hard disk on the system, if you don't already have one, on the spare IDE channel, to install the program onto and to recover the deleted files onto.

Well, try one of these undelete programs, or indeed try each of them in turn:

File Recover: File Recover

Final Recovery: Final Recovery

Restoration: Restoration

These are free trial versions. You may have to pay to actually recover any files, but they work by firstly showing you for free whether or not they can find any files to recover.

Other undelete utility programs: http://www.programmersheaven.com/zone16/cat733/index.htm

ty anyway ed but as i mentioned in an earlier response to you, i have already paid money to undelete programs, and do not intend wasting anymore, id rather just sell the computer, and besides, the program i lost, ive already bought another version, as for the music, just a simple matter of downloading again. ty anyway.
