Problems connecting MP player....

I'm trying to use an MP3 player and can't. When I go to Windows Set Up Components
Universal Plug and Play is unchecked and shows 0.0MB (I had lost all of my components
and reinstalled some - defragmenter, calculater, network, etc- manually by finding
them in a search but obviously missed this one). I also get a message when trying
to install the driver (when I get that far) that says I don't have a USB device driver
folder. Anybody know what I can do???? My computer did not come with an Installation
Disk but I have a Recovery CD and I believe I can come up with a Start Up Disk.

Universal Plug and Play 'should be' Unchecked. It's a very dangerous component to
have enabled/installed, if it's not needed. That has nothing to do with using an
MP3 or any other player.
For problems with the MP3 player, contact the vendor or search Google for a support
forum. This has nothing to do with Windows ME.

I'm sorry but I disagree. This is most definitely a Windows ME issue. It originated
from something gone wrong previously and is affecting my ability to use any hardware
that needs to be detected through the USB port.

My apologies, you're right about that. Have you checked in Device Mgr. for any exclamation
points, i.e. problem devices listed under USB?
This article may be of help...

Everything listed under the USB is fine iunder device manager until the computer
detects the MP3 player and then that gets an exclamation point. Tells me no driver
installed and when I try to install thats when it tells me it can't find the driver
files.

You need to locate drivers for your player on the manufacturer's site, I assume.
Windows doesn't auto come with drivers for peripheral devices.
I was correct after all. :) Ask a friend to help figure it out.

Thank you for all of your help.
Just so that you know I'm not a complete computer idiot. The MP3 player is compatible
with Windows ME (which is why I chose this one) but does not offer a driver. No
installation CD with the player and no drivers on the website. According to the
book and the help files on their site the computer should automatically detect it.
OH WELL!
Thanks again!!!!

I wasn't implying you were a computer idiot at all, Kelly. I'm sure you're not.
I would assume, if they say you don't need special drivers... you shouldn't need
them then! Since you had/have ? other problems as well, I wonder if a repair/reinstall
of ME would be a good idea?
Usually PC mfgrs. put compressed CAB install files on the drive in a directory. It
varies, but have a look at Jack Gulley's instr. on reinstalling ME from CABS.....
Reinstall ME from CABS
Only thing about that is, if you had updates installed, they'd all need to be reinstalled.
I may be able to find a link to a ME updates download page, since it's no longer
supported.
One other thing you might do first, is to boot into Safe mode. Then go into Device
Manager, and remove any/all instances of that device you said has an exclamation
point. Many times Windows will continue to reinstall drivers for a device, and you
end up with several instances of one device. (not good) Safe mode will show if there
are others installed.
In fact, you can remove any that show duplicates or exclamation points, because
that can cause problems in itself. When you reboot Windows will detect new hardware
and reinstall drivers. Let me know what you find out.

Out of curiousity, what is the brand and model of the MP3 device? Reason being that
there are some being sold that have been mistakenly labeled as being compatible with
Win ME when in fact they aren't. In fact, NOT ONE that I have seen is truely compatible
with Win 9X without needing extra files installed. Win ME is just to old to support
the newer hardware. If it is, then it is an older model that still should need a
drivers disc in some cases and/or you will need a Win ME install disc for extra componants
to be added, something that an OEM computer manufacturer might not have done before
you purchasd the machine. Actually not a new issue with older Win 9X machines when
trying to install these particular devices. Support for these devices in Win 9X
should have all but disappeared by now.. :-(

It's a Coby MP-C7085.
I'm having the same problem getting the computer to recognize and let me use a Sony
Micro Vault USB flash drive so I'm almost certain it is the computer (ie: missing
files) and not the device itself!

Does the Device Manager show/list the USB device and as operating properly? If you
are running Win ME it is USB 1.1 (if it is 2.0 it will say "Enhanced") where as many
newer devices will work best on USB 2.0 with some only working on USB 2.0. May
or may not be an issue here. Can't tell that without physically seeing the machine
to check it out.
What is the brand and model of the computer?
As for the Coby, there are a lot of complaints on it. Never worked with one so can't
confirm but many people report that the interface isn't good and that you should
save your money.
As for the Sony, there are many fakes being sold so it depends on where you may have
purchased it as to the possibility that it isn't a real Sony device.

Thank you for attempting to help me solve my problem. Ms. Eagle, that goes for you
too. It is so appreciated.
After much tweaking and tuning (registry, virus scans, adaware scans, deleting programs,
system restore) the computer finally recognized and installed the device. It had
to pick up a generic driver but it's working like a champ. Sometimes luck is on
my side.
