Hi Donna.
Which version of Internet Explorer are you using?
Just open IE and select Help\About Internet Explorer and look at Update Versions.

Hi Keith, I am using Internet Explorer 6 and I have Winddows ME. I can't update
since 7 is for XP. I read that if I tried an Error Fix that would help but I tried
that and no go. I was having problems and I even took my computer to someone and
had it all redone and it's still acting the same. I'm not sure what to do now. At
first thought might be the internet connection but it does it when I'm not connected
too. I'm stumped!

Hi Donna.
You maybe using Internet Explorer 6 but are you using SP1 (Service Pack 1). Thats
why I said read the Update Versions: from the About box.
If your not using SP1 then you can download it from Microsoft, but it will take a
while if your using dialup.

Hi Keith, I looked where you said to look and under Updates it says 0. And when
I click on it, it doesn't do anything. Does that mean I already have the service
pack then? The guy that redid my computer installed 6 because I had 5 before and
I did try to install 6 with the service pack but it kept messing up and wouldn't
install. I really appreciate your help. If you can think of anything else let me
know. This is driving me crazy. lol....short drive it is though. lol....

No, you don't have any service packs installed or it would say "SP1" etc. In my
experience and those I talk to, you are better off staying with IE5.5 with it's service
packs and updates. IE6 was originally targeted for XP, and IE 7 really was targeted
for Vista but does work for XP as XP and Vista are both NT type systems while Win
9X is not (Win 9X= Win 95/98/98SE/ME)..
I've worked on some XP systems that won't work well with IE7 if they are to slow
and not enough memory or running to many processes. IE6 can totally choke a Win
9X machine depending on the specs of your machine (as in, not enough memory, fast
enough, to many processes/apps running/type of software programs installed which
can be incompatible sometimes etc). IE6 is a dramatically bigger code base and more
complicated than IE5.5.
I've worked on hundereds of machines still running Win 9X and a few will handle IE6,
but most either had problems immediately after upgrading to IE6 or shortly thereafter.
I have IE6 running on a Win 98 SE machine, but it is running a 2 gig processor with
512 meg of memory. It does OK, but can have some issues from time to time with the
plug-ins which are not all compatible with Win 98 and of course the security updates
will sometimes work and sometimes not.
You will find a lot of opinions here and other forums but most all pro's I know also
recommend staying with IE 5.5 updated for most Win 9X systems. Since it is recommended
that you not get further than 2 versions behind for the browser, you would be right
on the edge since IE7 is out. You can expect to have more issues with older browsers
as the support for them will eventually disappear from the webpages being written
anyway.
Not sure what other issues you may have going on, but I would drop back to IE5.5
if you can and see what happens. If still same issues, then you would have to dig
deeper into possible issues that may or may not have anything to do with the browser.
Lastly, MS has stated that since the support for Win 9X has ended, they are unable
to issue updates for IE6 that will be guaranteed to work on Win 9X system, in other
owrds, they can't patch the browser for vunerabilities and expect for it to be compatible
with Win 9X. You may indeed have problems.
If you Google the problem, you will see that others are also having issues with IE6
on Win 9X systems similar to yours. So that's why I suggest reverting back to IE5
if possible and see if your issues clear up.

Hi Donna.
Well if it says nothing next to Update Versions then as CK says you are running the
basic IE6.
I've been using IE6 for about 3 years now. I get the occasional blip when it crashes
and wants to send a report to M$. In fact there is one site that I used very regularly
and every time I go to it crashes and wants to send a report. All the hundreds of
other sites I visit don't do that. When I use this site at work there's no problem
but at home it crashes.
When I was using IE5.5 I never had any glitches.
CK

Well mine is an old computer Win98SE, 550Mhz with 520Mb Ram and IE6 appears to install
an run ok apart from the glitch above.
Well every months M$ send me an update link. I know they don't support Win9x/ME any
more but if your running IE6 then it will tell you to install SP1. It will tell you
a load more security updates for other products you have like.
It depends if you're using Broadband or dialup Donna.
Just click on Scan for updates. This is what is says I need.

I didn't like IE6 or IE6sp1 on Win98 or Win98SE either and stayed with IE5.5sp2.
IE 6x seemed to make Windows Explorer less stable.
I also had a problem with the IE5.5sp2 crashing regulary at certain sites. Ebay was
the main offender. When I would flip through pages too quickly without giving them
time to fully load IE would crash.
In general the kinds of pages I had problems with contained many links and graphics.
I don't know if Windows update still works for Win9x. For one thing you can't access
the site unless you have IE6sp1 (IE6 ?) installed. I tried searching for updates
at Windows update catalog
http://v4.windowsupdate.microsoft.com/catalog/
on a Win 2000 machine and it bounced me to a new version of that page. Search results
turned up no updates for Win 98 or WinMe. Don't know if 98SE and ME updates have
been pulled or were not offered because I was using Win 2000. However I was offered
updates for Win XP and Win 2003.
A good place to get updates for Win Me is at ERPman
http://erpman1.tripod.com/w98meupd.html
and for Internet Explorer
http://erpman1.tripod.com/iewmpupd.html
If you are on dial-up it may take some time for these pages to load but it is worth
it. Careful about some of the updates, some of them are unofficial. He also has links
to older versions of IE which you can download and burn to CD.
AXCEL216/MDGx Max Speed is another good place to look for updates if you have time
to read through it all.

and for Internet Explorer
http://www.mdgx.com/ietoy.htm
Donna, if you can't seem to fix the problem, try using a different browser. Right
now I am trying out Opera. It has some good features but I still need Internet Explorer
for some things.

Kieth,
Stop torturing yourself with a 550MHz CPU. I replaced a P3 550MHz with a P3 850MHz
I got on eBay recently for only $7. Most faster P3's appear for sale regularly ranging
in price from under $10 to $20. They are practically giving them away. The exception
is the P3 1000MHz 100FSB which I have seen go for over $50.

It works fine for awhile then all of a sudden it goes crazy. Like tonight it kept
saying everything was causing errors and needed to close down. I wouldn't no sooner
get one closed down and then another one would pop up. If I used a different browser
would I still be able to use Outlook Express mail? Has anyone used Firefox? I almost
downloaded that one night when I was having problems. I am on dialup and it does
take forever for anything to download. I'm still in the Dinosaur age. lol...Should
see about cable some day I guess. I just don't have the patience to mess with computers.
I only use it to play on and when it interrupts my play time it's no fun. lol......But
I do appreciate everyone trying to help me. Thanks alot

Donna,
When you said in an earlier post you took the computer to someone and "had it redone"
what exactly do you mean, reinstall only Internet Explorer or a fresh install of
WinMe?
Anyway, when I had the kind of troubles you describe it was usually associated with
certain websites. Many web designers assume nowadays that everyone has a fast internet
connection. I had FEWER crashes with a fast connection than I did when my fast download
quota was used up and the connection slowed down to dialup speed. So your slow connection
may be a contributing factor to crashes when you try to access certain websites.
There are some simple things you can try.
Clean out the temporary internet files folder regularly.
There are two ways to do this.
-Open Internet Explorer, click the "Tools" button along the top.
-Select "Internet Options..." from the drop down menu.
-On the "General" tab of "Internet Options" box click "Delete Files". Check "Delete
all offline content" on the popup box and click OK.
I would also Delete the Cookies. It might mean you would have to re-enter your password
for websites that require one.
The other way to clean out the temporary internet files folder is to run "Disk Cleanup".
You should find it under
Start--->Programs--->Accessories--->System Tools--->Disk Cleanup
Make sure the temporary internet files box is checked.
I found cleaning out the temporary internet files folder helped when getting several
IE errors repeatedly. However it is NOT a permanent solution. The problem will come
back but it can help in the short term. There is a downside in that pages you visit
regularly will take longer to load because they need to be redownloaded all over
again.
You said you only use the computer to "play". Some online games require Java runtime
files for them to be displayed properly. A lot of web pages use java scripting so
it may help to install the latest version of Java for Win 98 & Me. I believe some
of the very latest releases have dropped support for Win 98 & Me but I am not sure.
I hope others can comment on that in more detail.
Firefox uses a lot of system resources so works better on more powerful computers.
For that reason I decided to try Opera.
http://www.opera.com/download/
The current release is version 9.25. I decided to install Opera classic since I am
using Win 2000. I think the regular version is geared more toward the XP or Vista
look. Either one shouldn't take much more than 15-20 minutes to download. And yes,
you can still use Outlook Express.

Updates are still showing for Win98SE see my list. It knows what operating system
you are using before is scan for updates.
I know I have an old computer its 10 years old. It isn't a matter of buying a faster
CPU because my motherboard probably doesn't support it. I will buy a new computer
this year sometime.

I'm still using dialup. I tried broadband a couple of years ago but it didn't work
correctly with Win98SE.
Donna if you have problems download large files then there are free download accelerators
out there. I've been using Download Accelerator Plus for a number of years
and it works great. If your connection gets cut while downloading then when you reconnect
you don't have to start from the beginning, it remembers where it lost the connection.
Do a search on FileHippo

I think I may have found the blip when it crashes on one web site. I had a read of
dw.log, the Windows log file it makes when errors occur and it said.
Application Failure iexplore.exe 6.0.2800.1106 in flash.ocx 7.0.14.0 at offset
00032e33
Microsoft Internet Explorer
25 times it said this. So I downloaded Flash Player 9.0.115.0 (IE).exe and
it appears to have fixed it at the moment.
This site uses a Shockwave movie in its heading.
