It seems as if any time I go to YouTube and view more than 1 or 2 items my system locks up. What am I doing wrong? Any advice? At this point I listen to just 1 song and then leave the site.

It also depends on what else you have running at the same time. After you startup and you can only see your desktop do a Ctrl+Alt+Del. Write down all applications in Task Manager and post them here. Memory is cheap, get some more.

128 MB is more than enough memory to run YouTube successfully. I ran WinME with only 64MB, and had no problems on YouTube.

The problems you are having will have more to do with your browser and with your browser's Macromedia Flash plug-in. YouTube is highly sensitive to the version of the browser, and to the version of the browser's Flash plug-in.

YouTube uses Flash, and uses it so intensively that earlier versions of Internet Explorer and Flash cannot cope properly, and will quickly crash. At least that was my experience before I upgraded. But the upgrades solved the problem.

I use Internet Explorer, and for browsing YouTube.com I upgraded to Internet Explorer 6 (in fact to version 6.0.2800.1106). There are certain DLL files which have been improved between IE5 and IE6, and I found that these are necessary to cope with the technical requirements of Flash on YouTube.

To upgrade to IE6 go here: http://www.oldapps.com/internet_explorer.htm

Interestingly, some versions of the Flash plugin are reported elsewhere to make IE7 crash, so don't consider upgrading to IE7. However, IE6 is stable with the following Flash plugin installed, in my experience. If you are running IE5, try installing the Flash plugin upgrade before upgrading to IE6. I found that I had to upgrade to IE6, but you might not need to.

I had to upgrade the Macromedia Flash plugin - now owned by Adobe - to the Adobe Flash Player 9.0 release 46 plugin (based on the ActiveX file C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH\Flash9d.ocx), which I find runs successfully on Windows ME with IE6.

To upgrade the Flash plugin to version 9.0 you need flashutil9d.exe which installs Flash9d.ocx (the Adobe Flash Player 9 ActiveX control). Try this site: http://www.badongo.com/file/4016111

If you have any problem with doing the Flash upgrade, the trick is to uninstall the previous version of Flash first. There is an uninstaller tool on the Adobe website; or execute the uninstaller program at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MACROMED\FLASH\uninstall_activeX.exe (if present).

Keith, Here is the information you advised me to obtain when I signed on. I did the Ctrl/Alt/Delete and these were listed: EXPLORER ,AVGEMC, VERIZONSERVICEPOINT, AVGCC, CCLEANER, HIDSERV, MCCITRAYAPP & SYSTRAY. I don't profess to be an expert, so I havenot played around with much in the workings area of my computer. Thank you for your assistance and advice. John

Well AVGEMC and AVGCC are part of AVG anti-virus. VERIZONSERVICEPOINT is is a process associated with Verizon Servicepoint from Verizon. I've never heard of this, do you know its installed? How come CCLEANER is running without you telling it to? I use CCLEANER but I don't have it running all the time. HIDSERV provides support for USB multimedia devices with the Microsoft Windows operating system. This program is important for the stable and secure running of your computer and should not be terminated. I don't recall this running when I was using WinME. MCCITRAYAPP is a program file which most likely was installed by you. Verify the exact disk location shown below as many programs use similiar names as spyware and attempt to fool you. This program is called Motive tray application, and it is from Motive Communications and it is a hardware related program. This file is considered safe and is not spyware or adware. Program Files\blueyonderWCM\McciTrayApp.exe Actually you only need to programs running when Windows starts up these are EXPLORER and SYSTRAY. You don't actually need your virus checker running all the time. I use AVG and I don't have it running. Virus checkers use a lot of Windows resources. Any file you download or are given you can do a virus check on that file as and when you want too. AVG still works in the background even though it won't be listed in Task Manager. I was on a site the other night and it said I need to download an ActiveX to support this site. I clicked yes and it downloaded something in Temporary Internet Files but AVG picked up on it straight away and healed it. You can easily remove AVG from startup if you Run: Msconfig and look in the Startup tab.
