System Restore did something crazy..

I performed system restore. It took forever. When it restarted it said it wasn't successful, and no changes were made. However, something happened because there were all sorts of changes: missing shortcuts, shortcuts to programs I deleted long ago, lots of missing programs, several .exe files, etc., in the C:/ windows/all users/application data folder. AVG antivirus gone, Mozilla Firefox showed as empty under Start/Program Files, but the program ran fine. MISSING apps: didn't remember Super Anti spy ware. ----------------Now the main problem------------------- My printer is not working. When I try to print an old Word document, it says, "Current printer is unavailable. Select another printer." Then, when I create a new Word document, it says, "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the current printer set up." ----------------------I've ran the All In One Series Web Release (because I couldn't find my original disk). It looked like it installed fine, but I keep getting the same thing. Immediately after installation, HP manager (the HP icon) kept flashing in my "running programs" at the bottom right of the screen. It was like it was trying to run, but couldn't. When I use the desktop Start/Programs/HP/Uninstall, it does nothing. It won't print a test page from printer properties either. At this point, I would just like to uninstall it (manually, or however possible) and try the All In One Web Release again. I'm baffled as to how system restore has messed my computer/printer up like this. It's like certain programs are there (in the start menu, etc.), but the computer doesn't see them. Any help is appreciated.

Sounds like a big mess. I don't know how or why SR would foul things up, but it sure did a thorough job. I think your only option is to reinstall WinMe (just don't reformat the drive). It should leave your data and apps alone. I've had recent SR problems of my own; I can't even create a restore point. Personally, I think it's time to retire WinMe and move on to something else.

Thanks for the reply. After several attempts, I finally was able to install the bare minimum apps to get the printer working. You're right about retiring ME, but it's a shame that Microsoft has forced this ONLY alternative on everyone. Overall, my computer runs fine and does everything I need it to do. Going out and getting a new computer or OS is only going to be because I was forced to do so by Microsoft, and not because I simply wanted to. Just a way for them to make people give them money. I'm thinking about saving up and just getting an Apple. Seriously though, thanks again.

I'm on the same wavelength. I'm not excited about buying another Windows-OS. I've explored Ubuntu with my current pc and all the existing hardware seems to function just great based on the Live-CD installation. The only shortcoming is the conversion or migration of my data from WinME hdd, to the new Ubuntu environment. And... there are a few favourite win-apps that I would miss. I'm working out a conversion/transfer plan right now before I feel that I have no choice but to purchase XP afterall. My WinME is networked to another XP pc, so the plan is to copy all the WinME data (probably the entire drive) to a networked external hdd. Then the idea is to make a clean install of Ubuntu on my old WinME pc. Then I should be able to either access my networked drive or simply plug it in my new Ubuntu pc and gradually port over the data I want to keep. I've juggled the idea of getting a brand new pc too and decided that if and when it should come to that, it would be a Mac. Quite frankly, I'm fed up with MS's SR problems, defragging, Scandisk'ing, etc. WinME served me well over 8 years. But a few recent hardware upgrades to the pc (more ram @768meg, and a new video card) have proven that WinME can't handle that. Well.. I don't want to throw out perfectly good hardware. I'd rather throw out WinME.
