Defragmenter always stops at 66%

Every time I attempt to defragment my hard disk drive on my workplace Me computer,
it starts OK until it reaches 66% then it stops there.It totally refuses to move
from that spot no matter how long I wait. An hour, two hours even half a day, it
just hangs there at 66% and gets stuck. Does this mean that only 66% of the files
and folders needed to be defragmented or is it trying to tell me something? An explanation
of why this behavior takes place will be highly appreciated.

Well this will depend on how many operations you have running in the background.
You can always start your computer up in Safe Mode and do a defrag that way only
the basics are running.
Or you can remove the crap that hogging your resources.
Do you have the same problem while using Scandisk? It generally stops that from working
if there are things running in the background.

No problem with Scandisk and there was no other programs running when I ran the Defragmenter.
Unless of course, some hidden files were running in the background and interfered
with the Defragmenter?

Ok then will it run in Safe Mode? If it does then you still have crap running in
the background.
When your comp starts up and you can only see your desktop do a Ctrl+Alt+Del and
write down every file that it lists. I dare bet you will have 8 or 10 items in the
Task Manager list. Actually you only need 2 for Windows to operate, Explorer and
Systray. Thats what happens when you startup in Safe Mode, only the basics run.

What size HDD is this?? Also note that scandisk may or may not complete successfully
in safe mode. Even then, there may be errors or data corruption on the drive even
if it completes successfully. If in safe mode, neither scandisk or defrag complete
successfully, there is probably file structure damage and/or a failing hard drive.
If you know the brand of HDD, go to that manufacturers website to see if they have
a diagnostics utility to check the drive. Most do but some don't.
The other issue is that depending on the size of the drive, scandisk and defrag may
not work properly and can corrupt the drive when used. That's why we need to know
the total size of the drive..

It is made by Quantum Fireball--lct.;
lct 10 3.5" Series;
Power requirements: 5/12V===600/900mA;
Made in Singapore;
It uses FAT;
The total capacity of disk is 9.52GB;
Unused space is 2.94GB;
Free space is 6.57GB. Does this information help you diagnose the problem? Waiting
for your response.

That's an old drive with a bad history. I'm surprised it is still running. It's
probably having media failure as was consistent with it's history. I would back
up any data you want to save and replace it. OTH, Spinrite 6 may be able to do a
temporery repair if it is losing data (but don't count on it). Then it is time to
get your data off of it and replace it. Problem is, will your motherboard properly
support the large drives made today??
