New hardware found annoyance

Never worked with Millennium much since most people had someone, or themselves remove
it in place of 98SE or 2000. After my troubles here, I can see why.
Anyhow I am working on a friends older P3 machine that has ME installed and she recently
got broadband service but no NIC in the machine with which to connect up to the modem
so I, having installed numerous types of cards, took it upon myself to install one.
The card is made by "Trendnet" and is their TEG-PCITXR lowcost 10/100/1000 NIC.
Before this card went in, however, I tried installing a couple cards I have laying
around here and neither would install. So I get the trendnet card in and have a
few problems along the way but eventually I get it to work. I know this because
the machine in question is being used to convey this message. Anyhow, now, on every
boot, I get a "New Hardware Found" wizard for both a PCI Networking Device which
I cancel, and a PCI Device which I also cancel. Looking in Device Manager, I see
no problematic devices with the customary yellow question mark or exclamation point.
All devices are installed properly. No other cards have been installed after the
trendnet NIC so why is it that I am getting these new hardware wizards each time
I boot? I have looked through the registry to see if there was some sort of open
process that might be causing this and I have also removed the trendnet card and
reinstalled. In both circumstances I still get the wizards. This is bugging me
to the point of a backup and format/install of 98SE which I've never had this sort
of problem. Any takers? Tech Support Forum's list of wonderful helpers haven't
managed a reply yet and I am doubting I'm going to get one here but will be happy
to get some suggestions. Also, I've done a complete search of the web to no avail
so if you know something or experienced this before and have a fix, let me know.
Thanks.
ps, sorry for the "novel" approach but I'm a writer in my spare time and don't know
how to write short stories, (lol)

Multiple installs or failed installs in the registry possibly. Shutdown and remove
the NIC. Boot to safe mode and delete/uninstall all the the NIC's listings and other
devices that are old and not present that you know of and see in the Device Manager,
then boot normally and try to install the device and drivers again. Outside of that,
you may have to reload the operating system clean unless you just want to waste more
time trying determine what happened and tracking down the junk and entries left behind
IME.. :-)
If that doesn't help, then I would suspect a bad install routine used by the manufacturer
of the device or compatibility issues..

forgot a step..

After cleaning out old devices in safe mode, restart the machine and see if you get
any error or hardware found messages. If not, install the software first unless
the manufacturer specifically tells you not to, then shutdown and install the NIC
and restart normally. It should complete the installation process and may show the
new hardware found message. Let it complete and close everything if necessary.
Make sure it (the NIC) works, then shutdown and restart and see if the message pops
up again. If it does, I would say the manufacturers install routine is crap...
Just my experience..

Thanks for the reply. Actually, this is more annoyance than any harmful problem.
Instead of canceling the request to locate drivers I just had it do an automatic
search and install, knowing full well that it wouldn't find anything. Checking Device
Manager showed 2 devices not fully installed (yellow exclamation points). Other
than that nothing at all. Subsequent boots do not ask me for drivers as these are
already established as devices without driver, devices that are not even physically
present. The NIC that I did install works wonderfully and outside of the DM, there's
no change to the computer. Since a new machine is in the cards not too far down
the road, I'm just going to let it lie. Thanks again for your input though.

on my me machine I also had no card and went to my walmart and purchased a $14.00
card. It says it works with all windows. For 95,98, 98SE, Me and 2000 you have to
install the driver via floppy disc which comes with card. Unplugged machine, put
in card, started machine insert floppy disc and bingo it loaded driver and I am connected
to net. With xp and vista it will automatically find hardware and install drivers.
hope this helps

Hi Joe,
I don't have anything additional about your problem but I felt motivated to say that
you shouldn't apologise for your "novel" approach. If only everybody could state
their problem as objectively and clearly as you, life would be lot simpler! As opposed
to the ones who write in to say, "My computer keeps crashing. Why?"
By way of addition to what CK says, though, don't underestimate the likelihood of
a bad installation routine... manufacturers are notoriously incompetent at writing
their own setup files. If you've ever tried installing a D-Link PCI wireless adapter,
without the benefit of expert knowledge, you'll know what I mean.

Thanks for the reply. After exhaustive attempts at trying to figure it out and having
found nothing that works, I decided that it'd be best to just go through the process
of letting it think it was going to find drivers, knowing full well that it wasn't.
I think you know what happens in that case. So DM has a couple of question mark
labeled devices which I know do not exist and the wizard doesn't come up anymore.
I tried to delete the devices as well but the wizards come back on each boot so
there is just no need to beat this dead horse to death. Outside of the DM, the machine
works very well, my friend is happily getting on line with no problems and she will
be buying a new machine later this year anyhow so I'm just going to let it ride.
Sometimes that is the best course of action. But thanks anyhow for the reply.
Tech support forums site is very well organized and looks prettier than this one
but I come here more often because it has what they are lacking (atleast for me and
my own issues),... people who are willing to respond.
