Control Panel Icons blank but present

I was looking to recover a log-in to my Me laptop and one thing I tried was doing a backup of the two registry files, by using attrib and then copying them to a backup directory. I also then saw how to rename the *.pwl file to do what I wanted. However a side effect of the things I tried first was that my Control Panel window is now blank. The icons are apparently there, since the count is at the bottom of the window and if I type the first letter and hit enter, the applet runs. But I would really like to see them. Both the icon images and the titles/names are invisible. What can I do to fix this. It's not a great computer but it's still usefull for the serial port in the back.

I'm far from a ME expert but have modified the registry to XP and 98SE before and have had icon problems. Have you refreshed the icon cache? If not, give it a try and see what happens. It has worked for me in the past although your problem is more unique but who knows? See Icons randomly change to different icons. The page refers to random funniness with icons but will instruct you on how to refresh the IconCache and shows a registry (possible) fix. Good luck.
