Hi Dan.
I've used McAfee for 12 years without any problems or infections but I had problems
installing the updates last year. I downloaded AVG
Free Edition 7.5.519. It will have to be a 7.5 version because 8.0 is for WinNT.
Installed it, updated it and did a full scan and it found a virus that McAfee didn't
find. So which would you think is better?
I don't use any anti-spyware or firewall on Win98SE because I don't need to, but
there are various versions on FileHippo.

I would avoid the all in one products, they just bog down most Computers. Use one
of the older Firewalls like Kerio 2.1, Firewalls just stealth a Computer, and don't
need updating. The older Firewalls are just as good as the new Bloated ones that
may not work on old Windows Platforms anyway. Lots of freeware Anti-Spyware are still
around that work with WinME, and one of the freeware Antivirus Softwares

Hi DanTheMan,
I'm reluctant to appear as though I'm questioning anything Keith says, because he
has solved so many problems for me without ever knowing it, but I would also recommend
you consider Threatfire for your AV protection. It brings the smallest performance
hit of any AV program I have used, seems to be about as good as AVG, and doesn't
require updating every time you go online. Like AVG, it is free for personal use.
Regarding spyware, most people think Spybot Search & Destroy is the best; it doesn't
seem to involve any drag on performance and when I run a scan, it always finds something
the others miss.
