Most PCI sound cards are better quality then the Sound built into a motherboard,
and Windows ME does work better with 512 mges of ram.
Your Computer is old
enough though that I wouldn't waste to much money on upgrades. Gamers don't use Win
ME, infact probably just a few dozen ME users worldwide anymore.:)
I still
got my old ME Computer, but it is just used for my business files, and gets about
30 minutes use a Day.

You won't be able to upgrade anything in the computer, probably not even the case
can be used if it's old enough (even just from a ventilation standpoint). Certianly
not the PSU either as all of the hardware worth building a computer with today has
totally changed in one way or another. You do need a new computer in other words.
Slow system performance with XP or Vista is due to the hardware not being;
A) properly compatible
B) fast enough to actually be worth the upgrade dollars spent which in this case
means that you should have just bought a new computer, and the fastest one with the
best specs you could afford..
Recognize that Win 98 is being totally dropped in support in most major programs
and all utilities like AV and firewalls and contrary to popular opinion, firewalls
do need to be updated from time to time as holes and bugs are found in ALL of them
or if they are exploited from the inside by malware. NON of them are perfect or
without issues. That's why I haven't used one in years... I practice prevention
and have a professional hardware firewall on my LAN that has proven very effective....
:-)

XP would run terrible on your Computer, Vista wouldn't even Install on it. You can
put together a pretty good 2GHZ PC with 512 megs ram, Huge Hard Drive, new Case that
will run great with XP for about 250 bucks, with new parts scrounged from online
retailers, these would be new but outdated parts that are still lying around on shelves.
I just did it for a friend whose old PC took a Lightening strike. All I salvaged
from his old PC was the CD rom, and Floppy Drive, even his mouse, and Keyboard would
not work with the newer motherboards.
In your case since you like to game,
I would suggest a decent Video Card, maybe 1 Gig of Ram instead since it is half
the gaming experience, and that would drive up the price 150 bucks or so.Vista sucks,
and would run slow even on this type hardware.
