I cant start up normally. In auto scandisk mode it warns of a longname file and freezes. I am not that knowledgable in these areas. This has happened for so long I put it away and almost threw out the computer. Now I also have a laptop with Vista so I can go online for help but cant download onto HP w Win ME. I cant fix it if I dont know what is wrong. I managed to open normal mode after several hard starts by stopping scandisk and reg chkr by using exit and end task and by ending any irrelevant programs and evenually see the desktop, but the system setup displayer stays running and soon it freezes anyway. I restarted in that mode many times from the start menu. So I could open and run a program or software but for a few minutes and it freezes. I cant get to where I can do anything. Once I opened in normal mode, but I can't get a normal shutdown and restart after that. It goes through everything all over again. I don't have a copy of windows me to reinstall and I've tried restoring completely and still got the same problems. Now it gets frozen in the restore disk 1 and I cant complete a restore system any longer. I have a reboot other fixit I downloaded on a flashdrive but the usb port wont acknowledge it and I can't use it in normal mode without freezing up to go online. What type of

You can download a program that will create a bootable Windows ME floppy disk. Get it from this link: http://www.bootdisk.com/

Run the program, with a blank floppy disk in your floppy drive slot. The program will erase any data on the floppy disk, and make it bootable. You can then use it to start your computer: put it in the floppy disk slot and start the computer.

The computer should then start up and take you to the A: prompt. From there you can access the files on your C: drive (the hard disk).

Try running Scandisk with the following options (type each line, then press the ENTER key; but make sure you leave a space before each slash character):

C:
CD \WINDOWS\COMMAND
SCANDISK C: /AUTOFIX /NOSAVE /NOSUMMARY /SURFACE

For a summary of Scandisk's options type this:
SCANDISK /?
