The internet has some good tutorials on How to Dual Boot Vista and XP.
If done properly your Vista Programs will be OK. When Installing XP you have to also
install any additional Programs.

If you meant you just want to do a Upgrade Install of XP, and just dump XP over your
old ME install, then the Compatible Programs should continue to work. incompatible
Programs won't. Upgrade installs of XP over WinME will also be a bit Buggy, and you
got a high Chance that in the End to be unhappy.

If you have the same amount of installed RAM from the factory (64 meg) then XP will
have problems running. It will be so slow, you will be waiting more than doing anything.
Recommended amount of RAM for XP in this forum is a minimum of 256 and preferably
512 meg or more to run even acceptibly, and the faster the processor the better.
Yours is the old Celeron, another potential problem that will slow the system down.
Your machine can only be increased to 256 meg of RAM but it has the old 66 meg buss
speed so finding the old SDRAM (it will be used and may/will be expensive) may be
almost impossible or more expensive than it will be worth. Overall, XP will not
work well at all on your machine or at all, depending on whether XP will have the
drivers, as Emachines will not have them.
None of the system utilities by third parties, burning software, AV (antivirus) programs
released for only Win 9X will work. They would all need to be updated versions that
support XP but the minimum hardware requirements on them now may be more than what
your machine has.
If you have an upgrade/full install XP disc, then you will find an upgrade advisor
that will check your system and software and tell you what issues it finds, or you
can do it online from MS:

Hi Darrell.
They will all be lost so backup or burn to CD all your important files first. Thats
because WinXP normally uses the NTFS file system whereas WinME uses FAT32. But if
your drive at the moment is FAT32 then you will be asked if you want to format NTFS
or FAT32 either way you will loose all your current files.
The other thing that you'll have to watch is the drivers for your additional hardware
e.g. sound card, graphics card, printer, scanner etc may not be supported in WinXP.
Visit the manufacturers web sites to see if your hardware is compatable with WinXP
and do they do updated drivers.

One this I forgot to mension Darrell is that M$ used to do an WinXP Upgrade Advisor
app to see it your system is compatable to run WinXP. Now I've search M$ for the
info and links show up but they are pushing Vista now which needs WinNT installed
before you can run that app.
Another search brings up Upgrade
Advisor from PCworld which is the same file size as the other 32Mb, give it a
try. But it still won't save your important files.
