Ok Dan I presume your using Internet Explorer 6.0 or any version of Internet Explorer.
Goto Control Panel and Internet Options. Click on your Connections tab and is your
ISP listed?

If not then you need an ISP connection.

To check your Modem click on Modems in Control Panel. Click on Diagnostics tab and
select the COM port your modem is connected too, then click the More Info button.
It will now try the connection to your modem and give you a load on connection strings
and info.

No ISP Dan? How have you been accessing the web before then?

There are loads of ISP's do a web search. I use BTinterent.

As for your modem I'm not sure how a USB modem is picked up on the test. If you don't
have your old modem installed then delete it from the list.

I know it does thats why I would never recommend a repair or reinstall.

Do you have the WinME CD? If so you may as well do a format and a fresh install.
You will need all your additional hardware drivers as well, sound card, graphics
card, printer, scanner etc.

Go to START > SETTINGS > DIAL-UP NETWORKING and then click CONNECTIONS > MAKE NEW CONNECTION.

You can now make a new connection to open your existing broadband service, as follows.

In "Type a name for the computer you are dialling" put a new connection name (e.g. My New Connection), then click NEXT, then insert your country code and the phone number you are dialling: the number to enter is 0 (i.e. zero) as you are using broadband, not dial-up. Then click NEXT.

Right-click on the new connection, and select PROPERTIES. On the SECURITY tab insert the username and password which your existing broadband provider originally gave you, and tick CONNECT AUTOMATICALLY.

On the GENERAL tab (while you're still in PROPERTIES) make sure that in the CONNECT USING box you select the broadband router device which functions as your broadband equivalent of a modem (but you'll be unlucky if you find anything other than the broadband router listed as options here).

Your suggestion will not solve the original poster's problem, because he has a fault with his internet connection, not with his internet browser.
