Free online virus scan problem
Saturday, March 28, 2009 at 9:15 am Posted by elmoticky

My WinME Firefox browser machine has in the past
used Trend Micro with good results and satisfaction in
my virus scans. After a scan last week I decided to do
another one as advised to do one each week. This time
however, I get this message:
HouseCall is not available for your platform
You can not use Trend Micro HouseCall on your machine because your processor type
or your operating system are not supported.
I have tried everything to assure that I have the
same PC that I have used on every previous scan.
It seems that when Trend Micro starts checking for
requirements, a prompt appears that ask me to:
"Manually select or change the Housecall Kernel"
Although I have no idea what this means, I place a
check on the square that indicates that I agree with
the license agreement, which is what that is.
I do not get any options to choose a Kernel, but I
immediately get the message that I pasted above.
As I said, I have used Trend Micro repeatedly and as
recently as last week, I wonder if you guys have any
idea what is going on. I noticed at Google that people
seem to have problems with different error messages. So if you can give me a clue,
I will really
appreciate it.
My WinMe is an old machine and other free scans out
there require newer models, which for me is really
sucking at this time.
I hope that I posted this on the correct forum.
Thanks in advance.

If you have IE6 installed use it for online scans. Firefox is safer for everyday
Web use, but the online scanners work better with the AxtiveX that is part of IE.

Steve Thanks for your advise. I have IE5 but my
default browser is firefox. Do you think that IE5
will work? I mean I have used this computer on
several occasion to get a free scan with Trend Micro
even using IE5. Other than AxtiveX, Java is also
part of the requirement by Trend Micro. I have
Java and with it I have gotten my scans.
Not being argumentive Steve, I just do not get it
that I am not allowed. It happened before. Once I
got the same message but I kept trying until I got
permitted, so what do you think about that?
So if I change my default to IE5 do you think that
will work. Nothing would be lost and I can always
change the default back, right?
Let me know what you think Steve....Now come to
think about it, I already tried using IE5 but I did not
change it to my default.
Thanks

Default Browser has nothing to do with it. You can still use IE on occasion, and
keep Firefox as the Default Browser.
I'm not sure if IE5 will work with the
Online Scans or not. I have not had IE5 installed on a Computer in 5 or 6 years.
I have had intermittent problems with all the online scanners over the years. Sometimes
they don't work, and I'm clueless as to why.
Panda online Active Scan is one
I use most often.

According to their website,
"Trend Micro’s HouseCall requires the following system components:
Operating System:
Microsoft Windows SP6a/2000,SP2/XP,SP1/2003, Vista and Windows MCE 2005
Linux Distributions that supports libc6
Solaris 2.6 and above
Software:
Microsoft Internet Explorer (IE) 6.0 or later
Mozilla Firefox 1.5 or later
Camino 1.0 or later"
It appears WinMe is no longer supported.

Thank you for your advise. I am familiar with Trend
Micro website. To suggest that WinMe is no longer
supported for running a virus scan is confusing.
Just last week I ran a satisfactory virus scan of my
whole system and even saved a log which prompted
me to want to run another scan.
I also have noted that I have had this same problem
in the past, only to be allowed to run the scan later
the same week.
If you have documented reports from Trend Micro
that states what you tell me, please forward that
statement to me. I will appreciate it a lot.
I will keep trying.
Thank you

The product website says that WinMe is not supported, and when you try to run a scan,
you get a message that "HouseCall is not available for your platform" and "your processor
type or your operating system are not supported."
ClamWin is slow but has a good detection rate. The downloads are rather large for
dial-up, but it does work. You can't count on anything continuing for Windows Me,
so suggest you don't waste time. If you have limited disk space, you can run the
portable version from a CD or USB stick.
http://www.clamwin.com/
http://portableapps.com/apps/utilities/clamwin_portable
Other possible options are regular backups, an old firewall without extra features,
Spybot Search and Destory, McAfee Stinger, and old versions of Win Patrol and Spyware
Blaster.

Ancien, thank you for your advise. It is true that I
continue to depend too much on my old WinMe. I
agree with what someone here at annoyance.org
told me one day.."WinMe is like an old car that you
cannot find parts for it any longer"..or something
like that.
I agree.
Still, I continue to be baffled by the sudden change
that occurred during only three days. I ran a scan on
a Friday for example, and on Monday I started getting that message.
But I guess I finally have to accept that it is a brand
new rule by Trend Micro. So be it.
Thanks for your message and time Ancien.

I don't see a problem with continuing to use Win Me. I'm still able to find USB sticks
that support it. ClamWin was suggested because it appeared you want to avoid any
performance hit from a real time scanner, and ClamWin is a standalone. However, Avast!
Home Free Edition runs very well on a plain jane Win98FE box with a 366 celeron,
and Avast will support W9x through the end of this year. That would buy you some
time. There isn't a lot of new virus risk to using WinMe, anyway. Evildoers have
bigger targets in mind. At least one to two tenths of one percent of PC's still use
Win Me. One forum tracked hits and reported about 300 WinMe compared to about 3500
using Win98SE. There have to be a lot of users that don't visit forums. You are not
alone.

Ancien you are absolutely correct! I reply just now at
10:10 a.m Tues because as soon as you gave me the
tip of Trend Micro UK, I immediately went there. It
works perfectly. However being impatient as I am,
I clicked for results before the scan was terminated.
I wanted to save a log of the scan for my file and of
course I blew the chance with that click. I had to do
another scan and started that one at noon Monday.
I went to bed last night and left the scan running on
the third step of the scan, which would have given me
the prompt for the log at the end of the scan. This
morning Tues at 6 a.m. I found the scan still running.
My impatience again got the best of me. I turned it
off. Malware detected:"Mal_Puridl 2 infections"; Adw_
Clickspring.G 1 infection"...As I wrote earlier, I did
saved a log from my previous Trend Micro scan before I was denied access again. So
basically my old
log has the same results that I got today. I guess I
will have to run another scan at UK later.. Thanks for
the tip. I am confident that these infections are not
harmful, at least this is the information I get.I also
have the file name where the infections are, but I
do not know how to look it up and delete them. Maybe if you answer this message I
will give you the
names so you can walk me there. I have not intention of send my log to any one for
fixing, not that I distrust anyone, I just feel uncomfortable doing
that. Again, thanks ancien.

Steve my delay in responding is valid. You may have
noticed that "ancien" got involved in helping me. He
wrote on Mon just as you did and told me that Trend
Micro UK was allowing my machine to get free scan.
I went there immediately and it worked! However,
as I just wrote ancien a while ago, my impatience got the best of me and I did not
allow the scan to
go completely to an end, giving me a prompt to save
a log. I do however have a log of the previous scan
that I ran just days ago, I have just made sure I still
have it, and I do. So basically this log is essentially
the same as one that I would have gotten if I waited
for the end of the scan today. I know that the third
step of the scan which is the last before it ends, is the
one where all the files are being assembled and the
infections deleted and such, I will however, run another scan later in the week.
Try UK Steve now that you can no longer use Panda
Active Scan . I have the names and file
name of the infections that were detected in my
computer, both are the same as my previous scans
If you have time, I will give you the names and file
so you can walk me on how to retrieve these files
and delete them. That is the only way I can get rid
of them...They are harmless but nonetheless it
would be great to get rid of them. Steve thanks for
all the help I have gotten from you now and in the
past. Thanks

Not to worry about not being an expert ancien, who
is? Anyway, here I go:
All of the scans that I have ran detected the same
malware/grayware/spyware infections. At first I
also had a pony in there. A "Troj_malagent.G"
infection. But somehow the horse is no more.
Here is what was detected by name:
Mal_Puridl (malware) 2 infections
ADW_Clickspring.G (grayware/spyware) 1 infection
File names:
C/RESTORE/TEMP/A007652.CPY
C/RESTORE/TEMP/A007653.CPY
The file names must be for the three infections, I
am not sure, but that is what it shows. These bugs
are harmless, and I really do not worry if they
continue to be there. They have shown up everytime
I do a scan.
I tried clicking "start, run, and typing the names
to no avail. So I just won`t try without anyone who
knows how to do that. And like I said ancien, I am
not worried about these infections.
Again thanks for the tips of what`s coming, I will
surely do another scan soon.

The .CPY files are created by the WinMe system restore function.
The malware files are trojan downloaders that masquerade as system files so get picked
up and protected by the operating system. Housecall can't delete the .CPY files because
they are "locked" by the operating system.
To delete the .CPY files you have to turn off system restore, which will destroy
all your restore points.
Here is the procedure to disable System Restore:
1. Close all open programs.
2. Right-click My Computer on the Windows desktop, and then click Properties.
3. Click the Performance tab.
4. Click File System.
5. Click the Troubleshooting tab.
6. select the box in Disable System Restore, click OK, and then click Close.
7. Click Yes to restart. Be sure the system restarts as this disables the System
Restore feature and deletes all contents of the C:\_RESTORE folder.
Once system restore is disabled, then run your Housecall scan and let it finish cleaning.
If it says you are completely clean, then go through the above process and uncheck
Disable System Restore, and reboot again.
Note that any back-up files or images created since you got infected will also carry
the trojans.

HouseCall - Scanning and Cleaning Complete
HouseCall did not find any potential threats to your computer. Please use HouseCall
weekly to keep your PC virus and malware free.
You did it ancien!! Congrats. I just finished my scan
as you instructed. My finding of course is above for
you to examine. One more little question and favor.
I printed your instructions. Once I have this clean
slate, do I go over the same task, as you instruct?
This means that all I have to do is go back and remove the check from the box that
disabled Restore? Then reboot?

I just closed trend micro and wanted to again say

got of the scan which I copied and pasted for ancien

I guess this wraps up this problem here at annoyances.org. If there is something
that I have
forgotten that must be done when a problem has
been solved, please let me know so that I can do it.
If not, well ancien, again thanks alot.

No need to borrow trouble. It's a way off yet. Here's the source for my comment.
www.avast.com/eng/system-requirements-avast-home.html
"Note: The operating systems Windows 95/98/Me/NT4 will be supported until the end
of 2009."

I use ClamWin Free Antivirus, and so far have been satisfied. There are a number
of free options out there
Good luck!

Hi Geraldine. Thank you for your ClamWin Free Anti
virus sharing. After I posted the post you refer to, I
did in fact use TrendMicro again with good results.
I have done so several times. In fact it is good that
you contacted me because I have a question.
Just finished doing a scan with TrendMicro not fifteen
minutes ago. I got "one infection" that was not
deleted after I clicked the delete button after the scan.
The infection is: ADW_MYWEBSEARCH.
After running a second scan to see if the deleted click
had worked, I note that it was not deleted. Do you
have any idea what this means. I note that mywebsearch button is located at the left-lower
toolbar with search window. Although I rarely use it
I have no clue.
Do you?
Thanks for any advise Geraldine

I am sorry but I can´t help you with this. You probably need someone with far more
expertise than I have! I know that mywebsearch is a program file, and that Adw could
have something to do with Adware, but that´s all. I hope that somebody else can help
you.
All the best,
Geraldine Robredo

Geraldine Robredo, the ad ware infection that I
mentioned is harmless at worst. I think that my
problem derived with some icons I added on my
"mywebsearch" toolbar, thanks to Firefox that gives
that option. The icons (four) were useless to me so
I just removed them. The reason for my virus scan
was that I noticed the slowness of pages searched to
turn, with the blue ribbon on the lower-right hand
corner not reaching to edge to cause the page to turn. I have an old WinMe machine
and have been
told here at Annoyances that my PC is like an old car
needing parts that are no longer available. So I just
wanted to respond to your nice sharing of ClamWin.
And at the same time addressing my infected PC,
which is not an emergency. Thanks Geraldine again.
