Malware

As I normally do, I ran a Trend Micro virus scan on my WinMe PC this morning and the scan found one infection Malware named Troj_Fakeal.CP which does not delete automatically when I press clear all, after the scan. I am wondering if some of you guys have any idea what this virus is, and how can I remove it manually. I can not get the information from Trend Micro on how to delete it manually. Any assistance will be appreciated. Thanks Elmoticky

Well it normally shows the location of this suspect file, can't you manually find
it and delete it?

It appears these Malwarebytes only work on WinNT systems. You could try Stopzilla.

Steve, as usual, you gave me sound advise again and I tried to figure out how to look for the infected file. I do not even have a clue to the file`s name, or where or how to look for it to delete it. I googled for clues and was directed to 'click my computer" and view its contents. I found this pretty hectic and confusing as nowhere do I find a file that may give me a lead. I ran another scan and this time chose selected items to be scanned: "yahoo" "my documents" and others and the scan came out clean. So I only see my yahoo mail as being the only feature that seems to slowed down significantly lately and that prompted my scan and malware discovered. I will appreciate any advise as to why this slowness in opening my mail browser is occurring. Thanks Elmoticky

Keith Stanier I apologize for the error in confusing your name to Steve`s. It was a regretful and careless typing. I want to ask you to disregard my request for help. I have concluded that it is no big deal to have this one infection on my computer. It does not bother in anyway my tasks while I am on line...Perhaps some other time when I really am in serious trouble, I will again ask you for help. Thanks Elmoticky

That could be a serious mistake.

Ignored virus infections could result in corrupted data files, depending on the nature
of the virus.

Ricer46, thank you for your advise. Below is the virus infection I found in PC when I first wrote the forum. If you can solve this, and tell me what it is, I will appreciate it..I do not have a problem with the infection in my PC. But is would be nice to get rid of it. Troj_Fakeal.CP

I'm no expert in this matter, but I know that the XP forum often recommends websites
that specialize in virus solutions.
I've always used the brute force method - disk imaging, but then I haven't encountered
a virus in more than 10 years.

Racer46, again thanks for your response. I have in the past read and interacted with website that specializes on virus solutions as you recommend. I have never been too keen in sending a copy of my whole computer log to a website for examination. I have not doubt whatsoever that they do great work in assisting those who they do. I am referring to a feature called 'highjack this' which asks that a copy of the log by saved and sent to a site for repairing and deleting the virus and infections. I am also not a computer genius, but the infections that I sometimes get are deleted through a virus scan I normally do using Trend Micro, which is free and very effective, as least the times I have used it. This time, though I think I have a pretty good idea where the infection is trapped, where the scan cannot delete it, but it does not bother me. As long as I do not run a scan, I am not even aware of the infection. So Racer46 thanks for taking the time to interact with me and letting me know what I know is a fact.

I don't see anyway that a HiJackThis log can possibly compromise the security of
your computer.

I agree with you Ricer46 with respect to the Hijackthis log issue. It is all my personal belief that it is so much hassle -- for infection that is not fatal to what I do with my PC. Like I said, the malware forums do a great job.

Ricer46 is absolutely correct. This malware may be causing no offence to YOU but it may be causing considerable problems for others.

It may have captured your computer as part of a botnet. In other words, without your knowledge, it is using your computer as a server for its own purposes (eg as a spam emailer). If this is the case, it will certainly take care to cause no offence to YOU because, as an innocent patsy, you are far too valuable!

One way you might know this is happening is if you receive "undeliverable mail" messages, where the addressee is someone you've never even heard of. That tells you your computer is forwarding emails from somewhere without your prior knowledge.

Hello Alan Masterman. Thank you for your interesting comment with respect to the infection on my PC and how it affects other users. I am sure that if I were the expert you are on this subject I would have found the infected file and deleted it. On Tuesday March 31, 09 a member of this forum named Ancien instructed me step by step on how to delete an infected file akin to the one I have today.(I went back to check to date so that you may see it) if you like. That is the reason I came here seeking assistance as the one provided to me by Ancien. I may add, that I am "a bit" cognizant to the harm done by viruses, but not being expert and jealously protective of my personal privacy I only seek advise where I have gotten positive results. So having said this, I only wished Ancien had responded to my post -- not as if I do not appreciate your advise, it is only that I already know the dangers of viruses -- that still does not help me. Thanks ( See: Ancien on date shown in this same forum).
