REGENV32.EXE seems to get corrupted.

(2 messages posted)
The REGENV32.EXE file seems to get corrupted, such that randomly it changes from
a 72Kb file to a 60Kb file. Doing a little research I have found that the file writes
the registry when you shutdown windows. Is there a virus that affects that file specifically
or is this just a windows ME problem. Help I'm beginning to feel like a windows beta
tester.

Any news on this topic? I am having the same annoying problem, also 60KB. As a result,
Outlook Express is starting very slowly. How can I get a new REGENV32.EXE file that
is not currupted??

HEY, I had the same problem with one of my systems, the REgenv32.exe became corrupted.
I made a copy on a floppy from a good system and put it in the windows/system directory.
No more problems. Maybe this will help you out also. P.S. I'm running ME on both
systems.

Seems to be a virus

Hi!
I had the same problem since thursday. I re-installed my computer two times. Then
I download a antivir-program and that found a Virus in regenv32.exe. Unbelievable,
because he found this error after a new installation with partitioning (fdisk).
I killed that File and now all is o.k.
Greetings from Krefeld, Germany!

I had a problem shutting down my WinME, it used to give me that error about regenv32.exe
and the only way I was able to solve it is by formating my C: drive using the "format
c:/u" command and resetting the defaults in CMOS. I tried every possible way to replace
that file but nothing seemed to fix it.

John, I had the same problem with regenv32 and replaced it as you suggesed with one
from another ME system but I'm still getting the error message "regenv32 has caused
an error in regenv32.exe" when I close down. One suggestion is that it's a virus.
Have you had any further problems?

I am not sure if there is any virus that causes this, but I had the same problem.
The corrupted file was 72 kb and I had another machine (that didn't have this problem)
with the file as 60 kb. I overlayed the 72 kb file with the 60 kb file and everything
was back to normal. The only thing I can recall that I did prior to the error was
install Morpheus and ZoneAlarm. I downloaded Morpheus from download.com and downloaded
ZoneAlarm using Morpheus. Just some info.

I used Norton Antivirus and it found the following virus:W32.Magistr.24876@mm It
cleaned most of my PC. It was attached to over 150 files. I still need to restore
my PC. I will do that this weekend and reinstall all of my applications. I will then
run NAV again to make sure all gets cleaned. Hope this helps..

My problem began when I discovered my regenv32.exe file was infected with the w32/magistr.b@mm
virus and I cleaned it using McAfee anti-virus software. That is, it was then
that I began getting the error message regarding regenv32 when I shut down the computer.

Mine started with Kazaa, so maybe it is download related. Some kind of mp3-virus?
Or some other download? free PSD-plugins? That's about all i've been downloading,
so the problem should be in there somewhere.

Short of a reinstall of Windows ME is there anything I can do?

This worked for me as well. I found the file in the Windows directory only so I tried
replacing it with no luck. Once a put a good copy in from another WinME machine into
the WIndows\System directory, it worked fine. I don't know if it will get corrupted
again (this machine had a virus which probably helped ruin this one) but at least
the darn message is gone =)

MORE INFORMATION
When you shut down the computer, Regenv32.exe transfers any new environment variable
settings that may have been added to your Autoexec.bat file to the registry so that
these settings are available the next time you start your computer.
Regenv32.exe parses the Autoexec.bat file and Config.sys file, and then places this
information in the registry. If the Autoexec.bat file, the Config.sys file, or the
Regenv32.exe file is corrupted, this process is not successful, and the information
is not imported to the registry.

but to Factory Install my Computer, ANd NOT run these versions of DIrect X. I don't
get that STUPID error no more, But I need Direct X to run some programs.

In the meantime I have found more solution on this topic. You have to
delete the following entry in the registry:
"HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Protected Storage"
After that everything is ok again. More on this link:

Another plan... I've taken this as far as finding the regenv32.exe and system utility.
Search doesn't find the regenv32.exe and the system utility does not apparently work.
I tried system restore and this does not function either. Any thoughts?

Its a VIRUS!
Download AVG Antivirus software (free) then run the program whilst in dos. Works
a treat.
To test your computer for viruses online go to norton.com

somthing else you might want to check is a thing called RapidBlaster. I was told
to saftly get
rid of this. i guess it is automatically downloaded into your computer (behind
your back) with no prompt, it continues to do so throught the internet with other
programs. i recomend RapidBlasterKiller.exe, this will get rid of all rb and block
any from getting in. also delete file rb32. this helped me with the same problem.
