Question about 'Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?'

I have a question about Do I still need CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT?:

In Windows Me I cannot get rid of config.sys, I delete it and next time I boot up it is back again as a 0 byte file, also if I try to edit autoexec.bat that also gets thrown out and the old Microsoft version put back in its place when I reboot and my edited version changed to autoexec.bak. So how can I permanantly a) remove/delete config.sys b) edit autoexec.bat

I don't believe you can get rid of the config.sys. If it's a 0 byte file it isn't taking up any room anyhow so what's the problem? As for autoexec.bat....try going to your run menu, type "msconfig" (no quotes) and click on the autoexec.bat tab and do your editing there and see if that doesn't work for you.

Thanks Curt, even zero byte files take up one sector, and I think that if you try to edit Config.sys the same thing happens as with autoexec.bat. I'll certainly give your tip a bash though.

True, you are using one sector, but unless your hard drive is like a 212 MB I can't see why you'ld worry about it. I know with the size of drives today one needn't worry about small files like that. I used to clean everything off my old 212 MB hard drive on my old DOS/win 3.x machine, but then, you had to. I was quite happy when hard drives got bigger and cheaper (don't ask me what I paid for the 850 MB drive I replaced the old 212 with......or how much less the last drive I bought was....the 15 GB......LOL) Let me know if editing the autoexec.bat in msconfig worked. I haven't really tried adding anything in there myself yet.......only moved or rem'd items.

Curt, I was having the same problem: I tried to edit Autoexec.bat under Win-me, and the file got renamed Autoexec.bak and was replaced with the original one. When I tried to follow your suggestion to execute "msconfig" I did not find the Autoexec.bat tab you referred to. What to do? ---Charles R. Meyer (meyerc@ecn.purdue.edu)

Hey, remember that no file takes up no space. A file taking up 0 bytes is really taking up 8192 bytes on most computers. IT actually can be anywhere from that to 2048, but like I said its probably 8192. This is because every file takes up atleast one (1) allocation unit. Also, are you sure that Windows ME doesn't use the autoexec.bat and config.sys? I can put anything in there and it won't matter? IF so, why are they still here? That's not backwards compatibility...

Best bet for these files is to disable them,, not delete them,,,you will get a great boost in performance,,if you go to Run,,, type MSCONFIG, When the Window opens,, check Selective Startup,,,, uncheck the subject items,,,,,start from there, then add whatever you want to Run,,,, on start up,,,,,,

Dear friend, please help me! I have a Windows 95 program for Engineering that only works if a file with extension SYS is loaded in CONFIG.SYS when Windows loads. How can I load this file using Windows Me? Tank you! Rodrigo Gelain São Leopodo, Brazil

If you have windows after version 95, you technically do not need Autoexec.bat. Also, when you delete a file it is NOT necessarily gone. It is simply "labled" available on your disk space untill another file takes its place. Just simply save documents or anything to your drive and make sure you empty the recycle bin(You can also delete the files using DOS).
