Question about 'Get Rid of the Logon Screen'

I have a question about Get
Rid of the Logon Screen: -i have a WinME PC which has a strange bug (or more
likely i just don't know what to do :) )- it will not login to the required user
automatically- it just logs in (without a login screen) to a [noname] user and then
one has to log off and back on again to get to the correct (named) user. so what
i want it to do is either produce the login screen with the correct user, so i can
just click 'ok' and i will be logged in correctly, or to just log straight in to
the correct user without any login screen. I have tried TweakUI, but it appears
to have no effect at all. if anyone has any ideas, i'd be very grateful...

I have the same problem!

I've experienced the exact same problem myself.
I have no idea what causes this problem (although one person suggested a registry
key, which didn't exist and therefore was not the problem) but I have found a semi-workaround.
First, make sure you have at least one user set up on the computer. Go to Start,
Settings, Control Panel, Users. If you see a list of users, then you're OK. Otherwise,
follow the instructions to set up a new user on your computer. When it asks you
how to set up the user's personalized folders (if you select to have each user have
their own settings) , tell it to make a copy of the current folders.
If it says you need to restart to use the new user, do it.
Next, you need to set up the "Microsoft Family Logon" (if it isn't already set up).
Right-click Network Neighborhood (NKA: My Network Places) and select "Properties".
If you don't see the "Microsoft Family Logon", you need to add it by clicking "Add",
"Client", then selecting "Microsoft Family Logon", and clicking "OK".
You may be asked to re-start. Do it.
After the Microsoft Family Logon is set up, you want to set it as your default logon.
Right-click Network Neighborhood, select Properties, and set "Primary Network Logon"
to "Microsoft Family Logon".
If it asks you to restart, do it.
Last step here... You need to add a string to your registry.
Open Regedit (Start, Run, type "regedit"), and navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon\
Add a String Value, name it "MustBeValidated" (no quotes)
Give it a value of 1
After you do that, restart your computer.
Windows will show your logon screen, shortly followed by an error message saying
that your user name could not be validated by the server. Hit OK, and you should
be able to log on from there.
This isn't a complete solution, but it saves you the trouble of having to wait for
the "Default" user to load, then log off that user and log in under your own.
Hope this helps. And I hope SOMEONE can come up with a complete solution some day.
BTW: What kind of system are you running on? I'm wondering if there are some common
factors involved with this problem.

thanks a lot for that cobi! i'll try it. may the force be with you...
my system is a Dell P3 600 with 256mb RAM running winme and a noname ethernet adapter.
the problem happened after i unchecked some entries in the startup tab of msconfig-
but unfortunately remained after i re-checked them! i would reformat and start again,
but it's part of a network and the network is never down for long enough to be able
to do this, and as the PC is fine apart from this annoyance, i just put up with it.
:-| i too, would be very happy to find a permanent solution.

Try going into Control Panel under Passwords, then the tab User Profiles, and select
the option that says all users use same preferences.

Can you still save your passwords if you do this?

I am sure you have solved this problem by now but I will answer it anyway. I had
the same problem with Windows ME.
To get rid of the logon screen when you are NOT using multiple users...here is what
you do. When the logon screen comes up..type in a name (anything you want- own name),
leave the password area blank, then click ok. That's it...I restarted my computer
and have never had the logon box come up again.
So simple yet so affective.

I had the same problem and would also get rid of this useless and time-wasting procedure.
I have tried to carry out the the solution given by Microsoft in Q152104, but I found
out that I couldn't enter my LAN afterwards. So I did as follows:
1.After boot up at Login screen: leave username as it is, leave password blank and
choose OK. You're logged in by YOUR OWN USERNAME and without password. You should
be able to enter your LAN now,
2.Check -if not- in Networkneighbourhood Properties that Windows Logon is enabled,
3.Start up Regedit and go to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Network\Logon and make the next changes:
"LMLogon"="0";
"PrimaryProvider"="";
"username"="-YOUR OWN USERNAME-";
4.Exit Regedit and reboot,
5.You should not see the login screen anymore and finally you can disable the "Show
Logoff" in the Taskbar and Start Menu settings. You can proceed this at any workstation
in your LAN. Hoping this could be helpfull to you, greetings Leo.

Although this original problem was posted some time ago I have a possible answer.
I have just built a Win Me machine and been suffering the same issues.
I found that deleting the Autologon reg key in the following path solved all my issues:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Network\Real Mode Net
See Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 141858
For more details
Hope that helps any one out there still suffering

If you are not using Microsoft Network for your
ISP, then "regedit" your HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE
entry for Network Logon and completely remove
the line for Microsoft Network Logon.
You don't need it. It presents a major pain in the
arse when all you want to do is reboot your system
as you do system maintenance. The way it is, you
cannot just go to the bathroom or get a cup of
coffee since it always stops at that blasted point
where you have to type something, making you BE
THERE all the time.
Delete the entry in your HKEY current machine
entry for Network Logon for Microsoft Network.
After that, you will be able to log on with your
user name, no password (provided you didn't put
one in the first time) and it won't try to make you
log onto the network (which is useless unless you
are on an intranet LAN/WAN).
Hope that helps.

If you used Tweak UI, and you have the box on the
left of the "automatic login" checked, with no
name and no password, then it is doing it's job.
You need to fill in the blank at Tweak UI at that
same box and put in your user and password
information. Then try it again. It won't remove
all other users, it just logs a specified user into
the PC when windows is booted.
Try that.
