Question about 'Windows won't save my password when I try to connect to the Internet'
Tuesday, September 4, 2001 at 9:07 pm Posted by Jean Luhnow

I have a question about Windows
won't save my password when I try to connect to the Internet:
The article seems to relate only to Windows 95 and 98 as it states. I am having
the same problem, "Windows won't save my password when I try to connect to the Internet,"
only I am using Windows ME. I have tried the dial-up connection and it didn't seem
to help. Did I miss something? Is this question and answer right for Windows ME??
Thank you for your time.

When you boot up, you need to use a password to log on. If you cancel,
windows starts up, but won't save any passwords because it can't be
sure you are an authenic or registered or authorized user.

yes, that is the case. the first time someone logged into windows they probably just
pressed cancel at the
windows login prompt. if that happens, and windows never requires you to login again
at startup.
you should be able to go into passwords and ak to be prompted. let me check to see
if i remember
how to do this.

I have had this problem too in win95. I found a solution that worked for me. I found
it at http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q137/61.asp Hope that helps.

Your client for dial up networking is missing or damaged.
You need to remove and replace the client.
Go to the control panel and click on network, highlight client and choose remove,
you will get a warning that your network is incomplete, disregard this warning.
Re-boot the machine and go back to network and add the client (have your Windows
disk handy), it will give you some choices, choose Microsoft, and Client for Microsoft
networks.
After you have done this re-boot once more and next time you need to log on the checkbox
where it says "SAVE PASSWORD" will need to be checked. It will then retain the password.

This is the only fix that actual worked for me and it only works on Windows ME as
far as I know. This is also
dealing with the registry and is nothing to play with !!!!!
Follow this precisely!!! go to your start menu click Run;
in the blank type regedit click Ok ; Then click the plus signs in this order: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/SOFTWARE/MICROSOFT/
WINDOWS/CURRENT VERSION/NETWORK/REALMODE NET. In the window on your right
you should see
three keys (Default),(Preferredredir),(AutoLogon)
Highlight (Autologon) only click the Edit button then
click delete and restart your computer.

Try re installing windows...the password file sometimes becomes corrupted and will
not save not matter what, sometimes you keep getting the password reminder thing
at boot up

Travis' registry fix worked A-OK on this ME machine. After rebooting, WinME asked
for a log-on password. I left the password blank, clicked "OK". Going to the dial-up,
I entered the ISP password, told it to save, and it did so. After three reboots,
it's still there, too.
Good info. Thanks, Travis.

ok, you are right. it won't save your passwords because you aren't logged into Windows.
this error happens with all win98 kernel based versions win98 win98se and winme.
the easiest way to fix it is to go to start once you are on the desktop and LOG OUT,
don't shut down. you will get the LOG IN screen. now to solve all the problems at
once, leave the password blank and hit OK. this way you have logged into windows
with a blank password and won't see the login window again, but now you are legally
logged into windows and it will let you save the paswords. you will not have to do
this again.

Go to START, RUN. Type "Regedit" in the OPEN box.
In the Registry window select: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE,
SOFTWARE, MICROSOFT, WINDOWS, CURRENT VERSION, NETWORK, REAL MODE NET. In the right-hand
screen there are three lines. Delete the third line.
The three lines are as follows:-
ab [default] value not set
ab preferredredir "VREDIR"
AUTOLOGON 00 00 00 ( I think)
delete this 3rd line. Works in Win ME.
