To be honest, I kinda agree with you. SP1 for Vista won't be no more than one year after the RTM release, as by then, all the hackers and virus writers would've spawned new viruses and opened up new loopholes in the OS.
I mean, look at SP1 for Windows XP. It didn't come no sooner than expected, and then SP2 came out, which covered all the loopholes in SP1. It seems everytime another SP comes out, another loophole is discovered, and then another and then another. And then MS has to go release another SP to cover those holes. There are at least 6 more different post-SP2 patches that MS released so far.

And when WinFX (or most of it anyway) gets back ported to XP, along with WinFS, there'll undoubtedly be loopholes along with that too.

Microsoft sometimes appears to purposely making these loopholes to make us keep updating and stuff! Though everyone I know doubts that.....
