Yes, they did.
1) Netscape vs. Microsoft: M$ circumvented a court order to provide an Internet Explorer-free
OS by making their web browser part of the OS itself. An incredibly stupid decision
solely based on greed.
2) Java vs. Microsoft: M$ made Active X, a malware magnet with full system privileges.
3) Having services listen for incoming connections by default for no reason. As a
result, Blaster and Sasser sneaked in through open ports which should have been closed.
Run a software firewall like Kerio or ZoneAlarm and count how often bits and pieces
of windows try to phone home or (even worse) listen for incoming connections.
If you want to know what windows components are trying to connect, what servers they
connect to, why they need to do so, and what happens if you don't allow them to,
don't ask Microsoft for a plain-english description.
