Alpha: development version, for internal, top-secret, use only (too unstable). Beta: test version (fairly unstable), to be tried by the betatesters, so the author can improve the product for the common user. Release: the commercial release (stable, made with the common users in mind; in the case of MS OS products, I call it the "as-stable-as-a-MS-Operating-System product-can-be" release).
