Vince,
I've been using a couple different external USB harddrives (different brand cases,
too), with no problem in Vista. The needed driver is recognized almost immediately
once the USB connection is made. It may be that your external harddrive case has
a peculiar proprietary chipset or the actuall harddrive in the case is not fully
connected to the case.
