In Device Manager, you should see a listing for your audio device but it should have
a yellow and black exclamation point next to it indicating a problem.
Visit http://support.gateway.com/support/default.asp
enter your laptop's serial number and you will be taken to the laptop's support home
page.
Have a look for downloadable drivers for Vista. If the laptop came with XP and is
a few years old, it might take months, if ever, for Gateway to develop and post drivers.
The newer it is the more likely they will be to develop a Vista driver for it.
If they have a driver, IME with Gateway, chances are it will be in a form where you
just have to download it to a folder then double-click on it to run and install.
If no driver, you can try to figure out whose chips and circuitry they used for the
audio and do the generic driver thing as we noted before like the synaptic touchpad
driver.
