This is actually an annoying default in vista that is easily changed in the power
options in the control panel, click on the change power plan on the power plan that
you are currently using then about half way down the window click on Change advanced
power settings, depending on if your computer is a desktop or a laptop this might
look different there should be on option in the menu that says power buttons or power
buttons and lid, expand it and you will see another option that says start menu power
button, expand it and you will see 1 or 2 options again depending on if you have
a desktop or a laptop just select the blue word sleep and change it to shut down
and hit ok, then in the edit plan settings hit save changes and now your start menu
button should shut your computer down instead of using the annoying sleep feature.
