That's a tough question. I have 2 GB or RAM on my laptop, and run GIS applications,
as well as Photoshop and Illustrator, and rarely use more than around 55% of my available
RAM (at least according to the MultiMeter gadget on my sidebar). I can have both
Photoshop and my GIS application open simultaneously and don't really see any performance
hit unless I'm doing a large operation in GIS, and that's running the Aero interface.
My opinion would be that yes, you probably are going to be better off in the long
run adding that extra half-gig, but you may not notice a big difference, at least
not at first. Keep in mind that some of that RAM could be going to your video card,
depending on video RAM you have. So to answer your question...maybe or maybe not,
lol. I'm sure some others will have some better info for you.
