networking problems in Vista

Folks,
I have a problem that is driving me up the wall. I recently install Vista Home premium
on my home PC. Everything was working fine under XP, I just felt it was time for
a change of scenery.
Anyway, the Vista install seems to have gone fine and the PC appears to be up and
running correctly. I've used Window's update to download all available patches, internet
is working, everything seems great.
I then go to run any number of applications and I don't seem to be able to connect
to the Internet (the first that I noticed was world of warcraft, I can log in to
the patch download screen just fine but then it just stops, also BOINC can't connect
to projects, WOW reader can't connect to dowload its patch. On the other hand lots
of things work too, I can connect to normal and SSL web pages, I can download stuff
just fine, I can connect to my network printer). I don't seem to get any sort of
error, it just hangs waiting for a response. I've disabled, as far as I can tell,
the Vista firewall, I've even gone onto my router and disabled my router's firewall
just to make sure, even though it works fine with my other 2 PCs.
I've looked at everything and I can't for the life of me figure out what might be
causing things to just hang. I've read all the networking threads on these boards
and others that I can find. Something seems to be blocking communication on all but
the most basic ports.
Oh and my router is a speedtouch (I think OEMed from Thompson).
This is driving me insane, please help. Thanks
