The Vista laptop should connect to your router without a problem and you shouldn't
have to buy a dongle. Try turning off your security (WEP, WPA, etc.) and allowing
your router to broadcast the SSID, then see if it connects. If it does, then re-enable
your security and turn off SSID broadcasting and it should connect.
