Somehow the system had gotten confused, and mouse and keyboard were behaving badly, including the issue you are describing. A reboot fixed it. The only way I can get Vista to do this is by selecting the "use checkboxes" from the Organize/ Folder and Search Options/ View menu, then actually using the checkbox.
