In April I installed Vista and this very problem was so annoying that I could not
as hard as I tried ignore/work around it. I went back to XP the next day.
I work on 4 monitors and have several windows opened simultaneously, dragging files
between them. Explorer is set to Details view for all windows.
The XP way of selecting multiple files was to click anywhere off the Name column
and draw a box over the files you wanted. If you hilighted the wrong files, simply
start again by clicking blank area and hilight dissappears, just like any select
tool in such programs as Photoshop, etc. In Vista the icons in Details view are not
objects that I can lasso inside a box. To select them I have to follow a rigid method
of pre-mouse/arrow key selection that reminds me of some older DOS programs like
PC Tools.
I can't believe there hasn't been more people annoyed by this, maybe it's because
as the OP said there's no easily formulated phrase to describe it. I had to Google
a bit to find "full row selection" + Vista which seems to come closest to a proper
description of this issue.
