clicking to a new tab doesn't go back to original page

e.g. I have 2 tabs on my web page. The 1st one (on the left) is CNN. The 2nd is ESPN. I middle click an article link on Cnn which creates a new tab right next to the CNN tab (i.e. between Cnn and ESPN). When I close this new tab the ESPN page is defaulted to, instead of going back to the original Cnn page. Is there a way to get rid of this annoyance and default back to the original page?
