Sorry..... just noticed that. I just saw the "Open Office" in the subject line and
off I went. :)

I'm wondering if the other users are really opening these documents with IE. Without
a program being dedicated and capable of handling a file format, I question how the
file could be opened at all.

One issue is that IE is not specifically made to display DOC, XLS, and PDF files,
that I am aware of. It is designed to display pages contructed in HTM, HTML format.
So, when you see a window pop up for a PDF file, that is actually the Adobe application
which does any converting and displaying in a separate window. Without Adobe Acrobat
installed (or some other PDF viewer) you wouldn't be able to view the file. So,
just as with DOC and XLS files, there are specific apps that are designed to display
and manipulate those data types.

I have not ever been able to simply click on a DOC, XLS, or PDF file and had it open
within any version of IE, unless the file was saved so that it could be opened with
another file type. Granted, I am only speaking from past experience at this point,
not as an expert.

So, my point is that if you were to go in and change the default programs to open,
for example, DOCX files in IE instead of Word, it might display the page, however,
much of the functionality would probably be gone. Additionally, I don't believe
you'd be able to modify the page, although I don't know if you need that functionality.
So, anyway, just like the window that pops up for PDF files is initiated by an Adobe
app, a DOC file initiates the opening of a Word window by the Word application and
an XLS file initiates opening an Excel window by the MS Excel app (unless you specifically
change the program that the file type gets opened with... and that program, of course,
needs to be capable of dealing with the file format). Without the file or link being
formatted in a way that allows IE to read and display it, I'm thinking it cannot
be done without adding some third party app or add-on to IE (I haven't seen one,
but one might exist).

If someone else has a solution or knows of an add-on, post it please.
