Working with compressed folders and files

Is there a way to make zipped files act as a file and not like a folder? I always get mixed up a normal folder and a zipped folder. Also, is there a way to speed up the extraction of files? When extracting a file, even a small one, takes up a lot of time.. it shows extracting (in bytes) and it is very slow as compared to what it used to be in windows xp where it is almost instantaneous just drag and drop a file from a zipped file.
