I can't be certain, but it might be worth a try or perhaps point you to a possible solution. When the height of the task bar is increased - for whatever reason, and then returned to its normal height, Windows may not notice that the desktop space has been released??? Try playing with the height of the task bar and a bit of rebooting in between - its a long shot, but when all else fails...
