I have the exact same problem, 10 minutes prior to the sound loss i was actually
watching a dvd on my laptop. the next file i tried to play failed it was a divx video,
it played without sound. Now i have wav files ( recorded class sessions) that i listened
to yesterday!!! they fail to load in media player, divx player checked the mute button,
checked the sound settings the driver is there its fine. i uninstalled and reinstalled
the sound drivers again the problem is still there. I have windows Vista, with realtek
audio on a toshiba satellite laptop.
One thing i can tell you for sure is that this isn't your regular mute button/ sound
volume newbie problem... ( I also tried headphones, other speakers)...
