Bad news - I took my computer to a professional IT department, and they were completely stumped; it didn't seem to be either a hardware or software issue (wtf?). Eventually I resorted to a complete reinstall of vista, and now I have sound again. Still not a clue what when wrong - I can only live in fear of it happening again. This time I will have a full backup of my computer waiting, though.
