Easy Transfer Cable: Must it be Vista-certified?

I'm looking to transfer a boatload of data files to my new Vista computer (from an XP computer) using the Easy Transfer Wizard. I've seen older transfer cables that can work with XP, but Microsoft blathers on about making sure that the transfer cable is "certified" for Vista. Does anyone know whether this is a real requirement or just a gimmick? I can buy an older transfer cable for less money than one that's "Vista certified," but I don't want to purchase something and not be able to use it. Thanks for your help.
