Does the USB manufacturer have Vista drivers on their site? What does it actually
say in device manager for the device with yellow triangle?
How is the internet connected to the desktop machine? Is there a free ethernet port
on both machines? (if not on PC, easy to add one). Does the laptop have wireless
capability? Have you considered using a crossover ethernet cable instead of USB?
Or buying a wired or wireless router?
