Flash video's won't play

on facebook, for exampe, It says i don't have the latest flash player when i ty to
watch a flash video. It directs me to to adobe's site and I download it. It then
plays a "confirmation" video telling me i've successfully installed it. but when
i go back to facebook or even back to adobe's site, It says I still need to install
it. the process repeats it, almost like a temporary install which doesn't last...
can you help?
