One answer is that for some reason vista initially has no problem installing generic drivers, but after you do anything to upset that, as your new device did, VISTA has a problem reverting to generic. Try to go into your device manager and find you Yellow Exclamation go in and click on Properties/Details and try to tell it what your device is. In your case the Device description would be simply "CD-ROM Drive". This has worked for me. The rest of the info it picks up from the Plug N' Play.
